Simple conventional refining is based essentially on atmospheric distillation. The residue from the distillation constitutes heavy fuel, the quantity and qualities of which are mainly determined by the crude feedstock available without many ways to improve it. Manufacture of products like asphalt and lubricant bases requires supplementary operations, in particular separation operations and is possible only with a relatively narrow selection of crudes (crudes for lube oils, crudes for asphalts). The distillates are not normally directly usable processing must be done to improve them, either mild treatment such as hydrodesulfurization of middle distillates at low pressure, or deep treatment usually with partial conversion such as catalytic reforming. The conventional refinery thereby has rather limited flexibility and makes products the quality of which is closely linked to the nature of the crude oil used. 

The key to experimental gas-phase kinetics arises from the measurement of time, concentration, and temperature. Chemical kinetics is closely linked to time-dependent observation of concentration or amount of substance. Temperature is the most important single statistical parameter influencing the rates of chemical reactions (see chapter A3.4 for definitions and fiindamentals). 

The Printing Process. Tme integration of all facets of the printing process is limited, in most cases, to sporadic measurements of the individual elements and processes that contribute to the final product. There is only a limited effort underway as of the mid-1990s to estabUsh close links between electronic prepress and conventional processes such as proofing, plate-making, and printing. 

Synthesis and Manufacture of Amines. The chemical and busiaess segments of amines (qv) and quaternaries are so closely linked that it is difficult to consider these separately. The majority of commercially produced amines origiaate from three amine raw materials natural fats and oils, a-olefins, and fatty alcohols. Most large commercial manufacturers of quaternary ammonium compounds are fully back-iategrated to at least one of these three sources of amines. The amines are then used to produce a wide array of commercially available quaternary ammonium compounds. Some iadividual quaternary ammonium compounds can be produced by more than one synthetic route. 

Both air and oxygen processes can be designed to be comparable in the following areas product quaUty, process flexibiUty for operation at reduced rates, and on-stream rehabiUty (97,182). For both processes, an on-stream value of 8000 h/yr is typical (196). The rehabiUty of the oxygen-based system is closely linked to the rehabiUty of the air-separation plant, and in the air process, operation of the multistage air compressor and power recovery from the vent gas is cmcial (97). 

Any heterocycle containing the OCH=CH moiety can in principle extrude the superfluous fragment and form oxirene, as illustrated for a five-membered ring in Scheme 105. Probably the most propitious AB fragment would be nitrogen, but the required 1,2,3-oxadiazole (123) is unknown (see Chapter 4.21), probably because of ready valence tautomerization to diazoethanal (Scheme 106) (this approach has been spectacularly successful with the sulfur analogue of (2) (8UA486)). The use of (123) as an oxirene precursor is thus closely linked to the important diazo ketone decompositions discussed in Section 5.05.6.3.4(f). 

The basic kinetic properties of this allosteric enzyme are clearly explained by combining Monod s theory and these structural results. The tetrameric enzyme exists in equilibrium between a catalytically active R state and an inactive T state. There is a difference in the tertiary structure of the subunits in these two states, which is closely linked to a difference in the quaternary structure of the molecule. The substrate F6P binds preferentially to the R state, thereby shifting the equilibrium to that state. Since the mechanism is concerted, binding of one F6P to the first subunit provides an additional three subunits in the R state, hence the cooperativity of F6P binding and catalysis. ATP binds to both states, so there is no shift in the equilibrium and hence there is no cooperativity of ATP binding. The inhibitor PEP preferentially binds to the effector binding site of molecules in the T state and as a result the equilibrium is shifted to the inactive state. By contrast the activator ADP preferentially binds to the effector site of molecules in the R state and as a result shifts the equilibrium to the R state with its four available, catalytically competent, active sites per molecule.

In scale-up, runaway exothermic chemical reactions can be prevented by taking appropriate safety measures. The onset or critical temperature for a runaway reaction depends on the rate of heat generation and the rate of cooling, which are closely linked to the dimensions of the vessel. 

Problems can also arise when the results of safety audits are used in a competitive manner, for example, to compare two plants. Such use is obviously closely linked to the operation of incentive schemes. However, as was pointed out earlier, there is no evidence that giving an award to the "best plant" produces any lasting improvement in safety. The problem here is that the competitive aspect may be a diversion from the aim of safety audits, which... 

If the pattern does not fit into an immediately identifiable pattern, the process worker may then consciously apply more explicit "if-then" rules to link the various symptoms with likely causes. Three alternative outcomes are possible from this process. If the diagnosis and the required actions are very closely linked (because this situation arises frequently) then a branch to the Execute Actions box will occur. If the required action is less obvious, then the branch to the Select/Formulate Actions box will be likely, where specific action rules of the form "if situation is X then do Y" will be applied. A third possibility is that the operating team are unable or imwilling to respond immediately to the situation because they are uncertain about its implications for safety and/or production. They will then move to the Implications of plant state box. 

The name 5-azaorotic acid should be given to allantoxanic (oxonic) acid but it is not yet commonly used. The elucidation of the correct structure of this compound was closely linked to the solution of the course of oxidation of uric acid mentioned earlier. 

Other derivatives of s-triazine, in particular the 2,4-disubstituted ones, are usually prepared by total synthesis and are therefore not closely linked with the chemistry of 5-azauracil unlike the analogous derivatives of 1,2,4-triazine. 2,4-Dimethoxy-l,3,5-triazine was mentioned earlier (e.g., Section II,A,2,a), the other substances are not related to the present subject. 

The chemistry of the 6-aza analogs of pyrimidine bases which has been developed from the biochemical aspect since about 1956 was based on work reported in relatively numerous older papers. In spite of the fact that 6-azauracil was prepared only in 1947 and suitable syntheses were described only quite recently, substances of this type and methods of their preparation had been known for a long time. The chemistry of 6-aza analogs of pyrimidine bases is therefore relatively closely linked with the chemistry of the 1,2,4-triazine derivatives.

The turbogenerator speed must be maintained within narrow limits if it is to generate power acceptably and the control system must be capable of preventing over-speed upon sudden loss of load. For this latter requirement, fastacting valves are necessary with full modulation within 0.5 s. Calcium bicarbonate is the most important, but magnesium bicarbonate may be present in smaller quantities in general, it may be regarded as having properties similar to those of the calcium compound except that on decomposition by heat it deposits magnesium hydroxide whereas calcium bicarbonate precipitates the carbonate.

Many processes in living organisms are closely linked to energy transfer and to charge transfer complexes. Therefore, studies of the properties of PCSs are important in solving certain problems of bioenergetics, enzymatic catalysis, photoinduced carcinogenesis, etc. 

Knockout mice have been reported for several FATPs [1]. As insulin desensitization has been closely linked to excessive fatty acid uptake and intracellular diacylgly-cerol and TG accumulation, these animal models were particularly evaluated in the context of protection from diet-induced type 2 diabetes ( Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM)).
