Exp. 1. Can Female Chemical Cues Elicit Amplectic Clasping in Males T o determine if female chemical cues can stimulate male clasping, males were tested individually with two models. Scented models were prepared by placing clean models in a small container with 30 freshly captured females in a small volume of de-chlorinated water (approximately 50 ml) so that females were in direct contact with the models. The other set of models was clean (unscented model). 

Exp. 3. Is the Chemical Signal Stimulus-Sex Specific To test if the chemical stimulus is specifically produced and/or secreted by females, males were tested individually with two models. Female-scented models were prepared immediately before testing by soaking clean models for 2 hours in 350 ml water that had held 35 females for about 12 hrs. Male-scented models were prepared similarly except that the water (250 ml) had held 25 freshly caught, reproductively active males.
