Coatings chlorinated rubber

Chlorinated rubber is soluble in aromatic solvents, and paints made from it dry by solvent evaporation alone. In contrast to the vinyls, there is less difficulty in formulating systems that are suitable for brush application. It has excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals and to water, but as it is extremely brittle it needs to be plasticised. To preserve chemical resistance it is necessary to use inert plasticisers such as chlorinated paraffin wax. Due to the presence of ozone depleting solvents, chlorinated rubber coatings are being phased out and largely replaced by vinyl acrylic coatings which have very similar performance and can be formulated from lower aromatic or aliphatic solvents.

In combinations with bituminous substances the proportion of chlorinated rubber ranges from 1 10 to 10 1. The ratio depends on whether the goal is to improve the bitumen-based coating without any substantial increase in cost, or to reduce the cost of the chlorinated rubber coating. Adhesion is improved but with the disadvantage of darker shades caused by the black bitumen.

Chlorinated rubber coatings have been more popular in Europe than in North America. In both markets, however, they are disappearing due to increasing pressure to eliminate VOCs. 

The chemistry of chlorinated rubber resin is simple polyisoprene rubber is chlorinated to a very high content, approximately 65% [19]. It is then dissolved in solvents, typically a mixture of aromatics and aliphatics, such as xylene or VM P naphtha [19]. Because of the high molecular weight of the polymers used, large amounts of solvent are needed. Chlorinated rubber coatings have low solids contents, in the 15% to 25% (vol/vol) range. 

Because the film is formed by precipitation, chlorinated rubber coatings are very vulnerable to attack by the solvents used in their formulation and have poor resistance to nearly aU other solvents. They are also vulnerable to attach by organic carboxyhc acids, such as acetic and formic acids [19]. 

Dehydrochlorination is increased by exposnre to heat and light. Therefore, chlorinated rubber coatings are not suitable for use in high-temperatnre applications. Sensitivity to light, however, can be nullified by pigmentation.

Due to the highly alkaline nature of most masonry materials, one of the fundamental properties required for high performance long-life coatings on such a substrate is resistance to saponification. Unlike alkyds (polyesters), acrylic polymers have a carbon-carbon backbone which is much less vulnerable to chemical attack. Whilst isomerised rubber and chlorinated rubber coatings are stable when applied over alkaline substrates, thermoplastic acrylics offer better hght-fastness for exterior use and also confer ...
