Aluminium pigment

Painting with aluminium-pigmented paint is considered in Chapter 14 because its properties are essentially those of a paint and not of a metallic coating in this respect aluminium paint differs from zinc-rich paint which can be formulated to provide galvanic properties similar to those of metallic zinc.

Neocryl B-811 is a 100 % nvc MMA homopolyer of M 40,000, soluble in ketones, esters and aromatic solvents at room temperatures. Vinylite VYHH is a vinyl chloride/ vinyl acetate copolymer (86 16), Mn 20,000. It is not very compatible with polymeric plasticisers. Sparkle Silver 3000AR is a coarse grade, acid resistant, non-leafing aluminium pigment. Byk 301 is added to improve the mar resistance. 

Inhibited aluminium pigments are also available, and these should be added after the necessary pH adjustment of the formulation. Optimum stability for aluminium pastes is at pH 7. 

The preceding formulation guidelines will on occasion appear to contradict themselves. pH value recommendations, for example, fluctuate wildly depending upon the need to prevent flash msting, accommodate an aluminium pigment or prevent flocculation in a black. As with many formulating requirements in the coatings industry, the final result is a compromise, reached empirically rather than theoretically. 

Acrylic core-shell polymers have been used as principal pxjlymers for aqueous metallic basecoat paints [37—40]. The anionic shell allows pseudoplastic flow behavior which ensures parallel orientation of the aluminium pigments in the wet paint film. This orientation and the low solids content are responsible for the metallic gloss and high color flop (change in color observed on varying the viewing angle) of the basecoats.
