Natural gas contains both organic and inorganic sulfur compounds that must be removed to protect both the reforming and downstream methanol synthesis catalysts. Hydrodesulfurization across a cobalt or nickel molybdenum—zinc oxide fixed-bed sequence is the basis for an effective purification system. For high levels of sulfur, bulk removal in a Hquid absorption—stripping system followed by fixed-bed residual clean-up is more practical (see Sulfur REMOVAL AND RECOVERY). Chlorides and mercury may also be found in natural gas, particularly from offshore reservoirs. These poisons can be removed by activated alumina or carbon beds. [Pg.276]

A variety of shale-protective muds are available which contain high levels of potassium ions (10). The reaction of potassium ions with clay, well known to soil scientists, results in potassium fixation and formation of a less water-sensitive clay. Potassium chloride, potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate [584-08-7] (99), tetrapotassium pyrophosphate [7320-34-5] (100), and possibly the potassium salts of organic acids, such as potassium acetate [127-08-2] (101) and formate, have all been used as the potassium source. Based on tests with laboratory animals, aniline may cause cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology (CUT) conducted lifetime rodent feeding studies, and both studies found tumors of the spleen at high dosage (100 —300 mg/kg pet day of aniline chloride). CUT found no tumors at the 10—30 mg/kg per day feeding rates. The latter value is equivalent to a human 8-h inhalation level of 17—50 ppm aniline vapor. In a short term (10-d) inhalation toxicity test by Du Pont, a no-effect level of 17 ppm aniline vapor was found for rats. Stress Corrosion Crocking. Stress corrosion cracking occurs from the combined action of corrosion and stress. The corrosion may be initiated by improper chemical cleaning, high dissolved oxygen levels, pH excursions in the boiler water, the presence of free hydroxide, and high levels of chlorides. Stresses are either residual in the metal or caused by thermal excursions. Rapid startup or shutdown can cause or further aggravate stresses. Very high levels of induced diastereoselectivity are also achieved in the reaction of aldehydes with the titanium enolate of (5)-l-rerr-butyldimethylsiloxy-1-cyclohexyl-2-butanone47. This chiral ketone reagent is deprotonated with lithium diisopropylamide, transmetalated by the addition of triisopropyloxytitunium chloride, and finally added to an aldehyde. High diastereoselectivities are obtained when excess of the titanium reagent (> 2 mol equiv) is used which prevents interference by the lithium salt formed in the transmetalation procedure.
