Chipping resistance

Although plaster has been a very successful and serviceable material, it is seriously lacking in hardness, edge strength, chip resistance, abrasion resistance, and strength to fulfiU many needs of dentistry. Some of these requirements have been partially filled by the development of the type III and type IV plasters. Table 3 Hsts the compression strength of dental plasters. [Pg.476]

In formulating holloware enamels the degree of acid resistance required is less than for chemical plant, e.g. reaction vessels, and consequently the RO2 (Si02 and Ti02) is lower thus permitting increased quantities of fluxes to be incorporated which confer improved workability . Furthermore, they can be fired at lower temperatures and have superior chip resistance. Conversely, chemical plant enamels are higher in silica and dissolved titania and require harder firing. An example of such an enamel is shown in Table 16.1. [Pg.741]

A primer surfacer, composed most often of a polyester to be cross-linked with a blocked isocyanate or melamine cross-linker, is applied next at a dry film thickness of approximately 1.0 mil by conventional spray application. The function of this coating is to provide filling and leveling properties as well as some stone-chip resistance. Cure conditions range from 250 to 325°F for 20 min. [Pg.1301]

The solvent-borne clear-coat is spray-applied over the basecoat at a dry film thickness of 1.8-2.0 mils. The clear-coat, responsible for UV protection, chemical resistance, chip resistance, and so on, is most often composed... [Pg.1301]

Despite the introduction of synthetic elastomers, ceramics and other abrasion resisting metals such as manganese, natural rubber holds a dominant position in this field of application and is the primary choice for abrasion resistance. Synthetic rubbers (particularly styrene-butadiene rubber which is dominant in the tyre industry sector) are used in dry abrasion application such as general purpose abrasion resistant sheets and conveyor belt covers, since the rubber can be reinforced with fine particles of carbon blacks to achieve dry abrasion resistance close to that of natural rubber. It should be noted that styrene-butadiene rubber is inferior to natural rubber in cutting and chipping resistance. [Pg.31]

Low surface tension causes excellent wetting of substrate which is required for good adhesion of the coating to the surface. Good adhesion promotes good corrosion resistance, impact resistance, and chip resistance. [Pg.667]

Surfacers are mainly produced from low molecular mass polyester resins cross-linked with amino resins. Blocked polyisocyanate resins may also be used for high stone chip resistance. Water-soluble polyester resins are increasingly used for water-thinnable stoving surfacers. Spray and dip paints based on polyester resins are used to coat automobile accessories (e.g., windscreen wipers, axle parts). [Pg.55]

Recent developments by DuPont in high performance car tyres have shown that inclusion of para-aramid as Kevlar EE, which is a pre-dispersed form of Kevlar pulp, in the rubber sidewall apex increases stiffness and improves cornering efficiency. The apex is part of the located radially outward of the tyre s bead (see Fig. 11.1 (a) and (b)). The EE stands for Engineered Elastomer and DuPont has introduced Kevlar EE into beltings, seals and gaskets, and bicycle tyres to improve resistance to abrasion, tear and puncture, modulus, and cut and chip resistance. ... [Pg.332]
