The ginseng root is among the most important medicines used in traditional Chinese medicine. Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, family Araliaceae, has been used in China for more than 2000 years to combat psychophysical tiredness and asthenia. Folklore Siberian ginseng was brought to prominence when Russian researchers were investigating Panax ginseng and looked at other plants in the same family to see whether they had similar properties. Li and co-workers demonstrated the use of SFC in the analysis of panaxadiol and panaxatriol in ginseng, a famous traditional Chinese medicine [28 J. A capillary SB-cyanopropyl-50 column with a carbon dioxide mobile phase and flame-ionization detector was used for the analysis. Methyltestosterone was used as an internal standard for the quantitation. Figure 7.17 shows the SFC separation. The method was found to be linear (r > 0.999) in the range studied and the precision obtained was in the range 2.2-5.7%. 

Ginseng is used for many medicinal and rejuvenating reasons domestically and abroad. Traditional Chinese medicine values ginseng as a nerve and cardiac stimulant, a treatment for impotence, to promote metabolism, and to moderate blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Two or three grams are considered therapeutic. Fifty grams has been prescribed but has resulted in adverse side effects. 

EPHEDRA Ephedme herbu Ephedra under the name of Ma huang , ginseng and rhubarb are the three drugs, with the longest history of use in Chinese medicine, dating back about 5,000 years.

Ginseng (ginseng total saponin) used in traditional Chinese medicine for at least 5,000 years for many indications. controlled animal study showed prevention of development of dopamine receptor super-sensitivity induced by chronic methamphetamine administration, therefore may provide therapy for adverse effects of chronic methamphetamine use. mechanism not established, but likely related to pre-synaptic dopamine receptors.

Although a British herbal text contraindicates Asian ginseng during pregnancy (Bradley 1992), no concerns for use in pregnancy are listed in texts on traditional Chinese medicine (Bensky et al. 2004 Chin 1991). 

Reference texts on traditional Chinese medicine indicate that tienchi ginseng should be used with caution during pregnancy (Bensky et al. 2004 Chen and Chen 2004).
