Most recently, interest has been renewed in the use of methyl benzyl and a mixture of p-and o-tolyl arsonic acid as a cassiterite collector [6,7]. The reagent under the trade name MTAA, which consists of approximately 50 50 of p- and o-tolyl arsonic acid, is now exclusively used in cassiterite flotation in the Peoples Republic of China. 

CPE X, the 20th anniversary meeting, was held in the city of CPE s birth, Lublin, Poland. Papers and posters on technology transfer novel, innovative and alternative treatment processes and environmental problems facing countries were presented. The meeting was enhanced by the participation of large delegations from both The Peoples Republic of China and the Taiwan Chinese Republic.

Artemisinin ( qinghaosu ) (18), a sesquiterpene lactone antimalarial compound with an endoperoxide group, discovered in the Peoples Republic of China as a constituent of Artemisia annua L., has created great interest in the biomedical community, owing to its unique mechanism of action on the heme complex. Artemisinin serves as an option for the treatment of chloroquine (4l)-resistant malaria and is used in some Asian countries as an antimalarial. However, the use of artemisinin as a single agent anti-malarial is a potential risk since the malaria parasite may become resistant to this compound class.

Current theories on their genesis revolve around a mechanism of mass gas transfer of material rich in carbonate derived from the upper mantle deep within the earth. The three most significant commercial carbonatite deposits are at Mountain Pass, California in the U.S.A., Palabora in South Africa and Paotou, Inner Mongolia in the Peoples Republic of China, see Figure 4. 

One of the most encouraging aspects of this field is the increasingly international nature of work in the area. The chapters in this book represent contributions from Australia, Canada, England, Japan, Peoples Republic of China, United States, Sweden, and West Germany.

A second field evaluation of the ASP process has been initiated in Wyoming. Additionally, an ASP field project has been designed for the Peoples Republic of China. The applicability of the ASP process to a variety of reservoirs has yet to be fully determined. Application of alkali and alkali polymer flooding has been limited to cmde oils having discernible acid numbers, wherein the alkali produced cmde oil soaps which in combination with alkali resulted in providing low interfacial tensions. The ASP process appears to be suitable for cmde oils with nil acid numbers (177), and hence should have broad applicability.

Alkaloids from Plants in the Peoples Republic of China.—In a report for which the original paper was not available for review, Chinese researchers13 have determined that vilmorrianine B corresponds to the previously reported karakoline (22). The base vilmorrianine D was identified as (23) from the mass-spectral and 13C n.m.r. data. From the substantial number of unknown alkaloids previously isolated from Chinese species,14 the structure elucidation of more of these bases will hopefully be reported in the near future.

Alkaloids of Aconitum kusnezojfii Reichb.—Researchers in the Peoples Republic of China have reported studies on the alkaloids of Aconitum kusnezojfii Reichb. that had been collected in Inner Mongolia.29 The pharmacological effects of extracts of these plants were studied in several animal systems.30 The known alkaloids aconitine (55), mesaconitine (56), hypaconitine (57), and deoxyaconitine (79) were identified on the basis of comparison of their physical and chemical properties with those of authentic samples. In addition, a new base, beiwutine (C33H45N012 m.pt 196—198 °C), was reported. This base formed a perchlorate salt (m.pt 255—257 °C) and a tetra-acetate derivative (m.pt 242—244 °C). From the H and 13C n.m.r., i.r., and mass-spectral data, structure (80) was proposed for beiwutine.
