Experiments with Chick Lens Cells Lenses were excised from Leghorn chicks and separated into epithelia and fibre cell masses as described elsewhere [19]. The cells were frozen at -80° and thawed prior to assay by Halldorsson s method [17]. [Pg.117]

The seeds cf many other species cf legumes are also eaten. These inclnde the chick pea Cicer arietinum, lentil Lens escidenta, common pea Pisuni sativuni, broad or faba bean Viciafaba, cow pea Vigna sinensis, common bean P. vulgaris, mung bean Pkaseolus aureus, Lima bean P. lunatus, and scarlet runner bean P. mult lorus. The entire pod of the carob Ceratonia sili-qua can be eaten and is similar to a candy because cf the naturally large concentratim of si ar that it contains. [Pg.95]

DNP was "remarkably similar" to that reported in humans exposed to 2,4-DNP (Robbins 1944 Horner 1942). In humans, however, the cataracts did not regress (Horner 1942). Chicks exposed to 0.5% 2,6-DNP in the diet developed slight lens opacity on days 2 and 3 of a 6-day exposure no cataracts were present in chicks when the exposure was terminated. The author indicated that the effects of dietary 2,6-DNP on cataract formation in chicks were much less pronounced than those of... [Pg.76]

Because 2,4-DNP uncouples oxidative phosphorylation but does not interfere with glycolysis in most tissues, one would not expect 2,4-DNP to affect lens metabolism. However, oxidative phosphorylation may be more important in the lens epithelial cells of humans, rabbits, and domestic birds (e.g., chicks and ducklings), as these species appear to be more susceptible to cataract formation after 2,4-DNP exposure (Kuck 1970). In domestic birds, cataracts occur almost immediately after exposure to 2,4-DNP and are reversible (Buschke 1947). However, in humans, cataracts can occur some time after treatment is terminated and may not be reversible. This phenomenon has not been fully explained. [Pg.100]

As a result of this active protein synthesis, the total protein mass is increased, and new proteins appear. The development of new proteins has been established by immunological methods and by determination of enzyme activity. During the development of the chick embryo lens, seven antigenic proteins appear. The antigen reactive groups of myosin appear in the heartforming area of the chick embryo. Fluorescent antibody techniques have demonstrated that myosin is diffusely distributed in the early embryo it is later restricted to the heart and muscle-developing areas [16]. [Pg.250]
