At the outset, one must note the fact that the public health values of the agricultural chemicals far outweigh the health hazards in their use. The conquest of the insect-borne plagues with the aid of insecticides can now be foreseen. Agricultural chemicals make possible greatly increased production and preservation of food. The Malthusian philosophy of starvation is being discredited effectively with the aid of modern chemistry. Society can and should use the agricultural chemicals with complete safety to health. [Pg.53]

Attendance at key meetings is part of the rite of passage for admission to a discipline, and in many cases, these are meetings of scientific societies or scientific sections organized around the discipline-at-large or the disciplinary specialty. The founding of physics, chemistry, and physical chemistry societies often turned informal meetings of like-minded friends into formal ritual occasions. [Pg.43]

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of publications in the area of predictive toxicology and fate in the literature. No attempt will be made to list these here, as entry of keywords such as QSAR and toxicity into any literature retrieval service will reveal the references. Journals that have been particularly favoured for publications include Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (John Wiley), SAR and QSAR in Environmental Research (Taylor and Francis), and Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences (American Chemical Society). Other important journals include Chemosphere (Elsevier), Chemical Research in Toxicology (American Chemical Society), Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry), although this is by no means an exhaustive list. [Pg.28]

Though the Cavendish Society was the recognised body for discourses on the physical sciences, some male members decided that they wanted a women-free social venue, the Organic Lab Club. This Club appears to have organised male-only dinners with songs, smoking, and musical solos, similar to the activities of the Manchester and Liverpool student chemistry societies. The Club was first reported in 189857 and was still active in 1905,58 while in 1911 a Chemists Dinner seems to have been organised in a similar male-only format.59... [Pg.188]

By 1949, the student Chemistry Society had become exclusively male. According to a male writer in By-Product, the Journal of the Sheffield University Chemical Society, the woman chemistry student is regarded as simply a husband-hunter ... [Pg.195]

This [chemistry] society, ever mindful of the comforts of its members, prefaced the month of December with an instruction by Mr Young on the merits and demerits of alcohol in its many and varied forms. It was notable that none of the women were present. Perhaps, after the manner of their sex, they wished to convey the suggestion that they needed no instruction in these matters.43... [Pg.276]

The University of Glasgow had a student chemistry society, the Alchemists Club, founded in 1916 by Catherine F. Davidson (later Mrs. Jones).91 The Club was formalized in 1918, at which time one of the two Vice-Presidents was a woman (Davidson), as were four of the six Ordinary Members of Council.92... [Pg.293]
