GORE. The CORE Electronic Chemistry Library is a joint project of Cornell University, OCLC (On-line Computer Library Center), Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), and the American Chemical Society. The CORE database will contain the full text of American Chemical Society Journals from 1980, associated information from Chemical Abstracts Service, and selected reference texts. It will provide machine-readable text that can be searched and displayed, graphical representations of equations and figures, and full-page document images. The project will examine the performance obtained by the use of a traditional printed index as compared with a hypertext system (SUPERBOOK) and a document retrieval system (Pixlook) (6,116). 

The quantitative and qualitative measures employed to compare U.S. chemistry with that in other nations included analysis of journal publications (numbers of papers, citations of papers, most cited papers, most cited authors, most accessed papers), largely derived from Thompson ISI Essential Science Indicators, as well as data provided by the American Chemical Society Publications Division. When I review a manuscript for the Journal of the American Chemical Society, I look first at the importance of the issues addressed and the effect the work will have on the way all of us think about chemistry. I then look at the details How convincing are the arguments Do the data support the conclusions Are there alternative interpretations of the results Has the work been put fairly into context within the scientific literature For JACS I need reviewers to compare a manuscript with others competing for the same space short, bland, uncritical reviews are not helpful Of course, detailed comments that answer the questions mentioned are essential.
