Canadian Society for Chemistry

In North America at the annual PittCon exposition there are papers and workshops concerning the future need for RMs, including the CITAC workshops. In Canada, in June 1993 in Quebec as part of the Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Chemistry, a RM symposium was held lectures from it were the basis for a CRC RM book (Clement et al. 1997). Further examples include reports of regional activities in China (Chai 1993) and Australia (Millar et al. 1995). 

Huzinaga was the recipient of the 1994 John C. Polanyi Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry. In his award lecture he described his model potential method, which deals only with the active electrons in molecular and solid state calculations. Dr Schramm holds 17 patents and has published 10 other books, and over 400 other scientific publications or proprietary reports. Many of his inventions have been adopted into commercial practice. He was awarded one of the first NSERC-Conference Board Synergy Awards for Best Practices in University-Industry R D Partnership, and his work on the development of oil-tolerant foams for enhanced oil recovery was judged to be a Milestone of Canadian Chemistry in the twentieth century by the Canadian Society for Chemistry. He has received other national awards for his work and is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and an honourary Member of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

One final suggestion that can help get green chemistry more traction in Canada is for the Canadian Society of Chemistry (CSC) to have a permanent green chemistry division covering both teaching and research innovations that is represented in all of its national conferences. Professor Yates chemical achievements were recognized by, for example, the Centennial Medal of the Government of Canada in 1967 and Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada in 1970. He was active in the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry for over a decade, serving as President of its organic Division in the late 70 s. He was editor of the Canadian Journal of Chemistry for many years.
