Chemical peels infection

Bacterial and fungal complications in chemical peels are rare, since phenol is bacteriocidal and fungacidal. Patients with positive history of herpes simplex infection can be treated proph-ylactically with acyclovir or valacyclovir during the healing phase for 10 days.

In general, there are few contraindications to salicylic acid chemical peeling. The healing process after a chemical peel must be as rapid as possible so as to avoid infections. If excessive crusting occurs, topical and/or oral antibiotics should be prescribed to treat presumed bacterial infection. 

Vasoconstriction due to smoking can create delayed wound healing and predispose to infections. Additionally, smoking also impairs existing collagen and elastic fiber. While chemical peeling can be performed in smokers, benefits may not be as pronounced.
