Ethyl alcohol has been made by the hydration of ethylene (9) since 1930. Like isopropyl alcohol, part of the output is used as a solvent, but most is converted to other oxygenated chemicals. Its most important raw material use is conversion to acetaldehyde by catalytic air oxidation. Acetaldehyde, in turn, is the raw material source of acetic acid, acetic anhydride, pentaerythritol, synthetic n-butyl alcohol (via aldol condensation), butyraldehyde, and other products. Butyraldehyde is the source of butyric acid, polyvinyl butyral resin, and 2-ethylhexanol (octyl alcohol). The last-named eight-carbon alcohol is based on the aldol condensation of butyraldehyde and is used to make the important plasticizer di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate. A few examples of the important reactions of acetaldehyde are as follows ... [Pg.294]

The patent literature contains a large range of chemicals which have been recommended as antifoamers, ranging from simple compounds, such as octyl alcohol, to more sophisticated mixtures of antifoamers, which are sometimes required in special applications. From a universal viewpoint, polydimethylsiloxanes are probably the most expensive, yet the most effective materials for inhibiting foam. Such compounds are in volatile and have extremely low surface tensions and low interfacial tensions against water. The surface tensions of liquid hydrocarbons are usually between 25 and 30 mN/m and since the silicones have lower surface tensions, they then can easily enter the hydrocarbon substrate. In addition, they are chemically inert, insoluble in water. [Pg.145]

The most common externally plasticized polymer is poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) (—CH2CHCI ). A typical plasticizer for PVC is dioctyl phthalate (DOP), the diester of phthalic acid and wo-octyl alcohol note DOP is the more common term in industry, but the lUPAC name for this chemical is di(2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate or DEHP) ... [Pg.123]

Several improved stationary phase materials have been synthesized for reversed-phase liquid chromatography. One material is vinyl alcohol copolymer gel. This stationary phase is quite polar and chemically very stable however, it demonstrated a strong retention capacity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.45 9 Although stable octadecyl- and octyl-bonded silica gels have been synthesized from pure silica gel50,51 and are now commercially available, such an optimization system has not yet been built. Further experiments are required to elucidate the retention mechanism, and to systematize it within the context of instrumentation. [Pg.131]
