Thermoplastic Polymers. Most thermoplastic polymers are used in high-volume, widely recognized applications, so they are often referred to as commodity plastics. (We will elaborate upon the distinction between a polymer and a plastic in Chapter 7, but for now we simply note that a plastic is a polymer that contains other additives and is usually identified by a variety of commercial trade names. There are numerous databases, both in books [1] and on the Internet [2], that can be used to identify the primary polymer components of most plastics. With a few notable exceptions, we will refer to most polymers by their generic chemical name.) The most common commodity thermoplastics are polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS). These thermoplastics all have in common the general repeat unit -(CHX-CH2)-, where -X is -H for PE, -CH3 for PP, -Cl for PVC, and a benzene ring for PS. When we discuss polymerization reactions in Chapter 3, we will see that all of these thermoplastics can be produced by the same type of reaction. [Pg.80]

The active component of inhalation aerosol is beclomethasone dipropionate, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid having the chemical name 9-chloro-ll(beta),17,21-trihy-droxy-16(beta)-methylpregna-l,4-diene-3,20-dione 17,21-dipropionate. It is a pressurized, metered-dose aerosol intended for oral inhalation only. Each unit contains a solution of beclomethasone dipropionate in propellant HFA-134a (1,1,1,2 tetrafluoroethane) and ethanol. The 40-mcg strength delivers 40 meg of beclomethasone dipropionate from the actuator and 50 meg from the valve. The... [Pg.88]

Classes of waste should be properly segregated for temporary accumulation and storage as well as for transportation and disposal. Accordingly, all wastes must be labeled properly before being removed. The label should contain sufficient information to ensure safe handling and disposal, including the initial of accumulation and chemical names of the principal components and any minor components that may be hazardous. The label also should indicate whether the waste is toxic, reactive, corrosive, metallic, flammable, an inhalation hazard, or lachrymatory. [Pg.515]

Automatic recognition and correction of these errors is a very important component of the chemical name conversion process. Based on available information, this procedure is implemented in the most flexible way in the CambridgeSoft Name=Struct program.48... [Pg.38]

The key components of a chemical reaction are the reactants and products, and these are usually represented by their chemical structures. In some cases, the products or reactants might be represented by a chemical name or a number indicated in the related text. When there are several reactants or products in a reaction, those structures within such a group are usually joined by the symbol + (see Figure 4.6), which is called the joiner. ... [Pg.51]

ChemSpider was launched in 2007. It is an open-access service in which constituent databases, the largest of which is Web of Science, are linked on a free-access basis, and which uses algorithms to identify and extract chemical names from documents and web pages and convert them to structures and InChl and SMILES identifiers. Access to the core service is free, but the user may be routed to charging component databases. At launch, ChemSpider contained 21 million compounds. At the time of writing, it was too early to assess the success of the service. It was bought by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2009. [Pg.23]

In most cases, for the assignment and discovery of a substance we have indicated the chemical name in English naturally this is not possible with the excipients , which are composed of several components from partly very different chemical classes. Here we had no other choice than to use the trademarks. Indication of such a trademark does not imply that no other preparations of identical or similar composition are on the market. [Pg.14]

Much of the interest in the field of thermal decompositions has been in studies of relatively simple solid reactants to minimise the problems of interpretation of behaviour in contributing towards a set of fundamental principles for the subject. In spite of such an approach, chemical correlations are often not readily discemable. Reactants containing chemically similar components do not always give comparable reactions, whereas resemblances in kinetic behaviour are sometimes very clearly apparent on heating materials with very different chemical constituents. One of the major aims of decomposition studies, namely the prediction of thermal behaviour from chemical and other properties, thus still remains unfulfilled, as discussed in the concluding Chapter 18. [Pg.215]

Identifying Information The label of a hazardous substance must state conspicuously the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, distributor or seller. In addition, it must disclose the identity of the heizardous substance or, where the substance is a mixture, the identity of each component which contributes substantially to the hazard. The statute embodies a clear preference for providing the common or usual name of the heizardous substance the substance s chemical name need only be provided if no common usual name exists. By regulation, the Commission may permit or require the use of a recognized generic name. Such a generic name would appear appropriate where a more detailed description would either confuse product users or disclose information about the product s formulation that the manufacturer considers proprietary. [Pg.331]

The proper chemical name of the hazardous chemical or of the hazardous component(s) of the mixture, if the concentration is sufficient to present a hazard. The trade name or code name, clearly identified as such, and common names or synonyms for the proper chemical name should be included. [Pg.447]

It is almost too obvious to state that companies should be aware of chemical substances that they manufacture or import, but in fact this is often not the case, and is where a compliance problem arises. The regulatory requirements are typically published by chemical name and Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Number, whereas in many companies trade names are more commonly used when tracking chemicals. The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) system most often is the easiest place to determine whether a product or an isolated intermediate contains a component that is subject to regulation. With respect to imports, they should be cleared by a regulatory review prior to importation not only for general TSCA compliance, but also to ascertain whether or not there are any TSCA reporting requirements under TSCA... [Pg.217]

Convention magnetic oxides that contain Fe " ions are called ferrites. This terminology does not distinguish between the crystal structures do not confuse it with the chemical name. We often say that ferrites contain Fe203 as a principal component. [Pg.612]
