Chemical Abstracts Service reference materials

CAplus. 1907-. Columbus, OH Chemical Abstracts Service. Daily. The bibliographic database from Chemical Abstracts. Provides worldwide references from over 9500 scientific journals and patent references from more than 50 patent-issuing authorities. Scope includes all areas of chemistry, biomedical sciences, engineering, and materials science, as well as other scientific disciplines. In addition to journals, conference proceedings, technical reports, books, dissertations, and meeting abstracts are fully indexed. Approximately 3000 new records are added daily. 

These sources included, among others, the U. S. Pharmacopoeia and the Merck Index. Thus, the common data base would contain compounds known to be of interest to people in the health field, including drugs, antibiotics, hazardous materials, pesticides, nutrients, and food additives as well as inert compounds in such substances. Chemical Abstracts Service processed these sources against its registry system and added registrations as well as synonyms as they were found in these standard references. The data were delivered to FDA and NLM in a form suitable for processing in their machine systems. 

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) provides a wealth of Information concerning the safe handling, spill control, health hazards, and so on, of a chemical. Most places are required by law to maintain an MSDS for every chemical in stock. At this site, you can search by name, product name, or CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) registry number for an MSDS on a particular chemical and then print it out. This site also provides lots of information about chemicals, as well as links to other Internet MSDS sites and hazardous chemical reference sites. 

The nomenclature for carboxylic acids follows the familiar pattern of adding the functional group name -oic acid to the named hydrocarbon chain except that the common names formic acid and acetic acid are still widely accepted. Thus, formic acid is methanoic acid, acetic acid is ethanoic acid, propionic acid is propanoic acid, and -butyric acid is butanoic acid. The CAS numbers (Chemical Abstract Service, American Chemical Society) for the carboxylic acids are listed in Table 6.1 along with the physical properties. The CAS numbers refer to the major carboxylic acid component. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for CAS numbers of any minor impurities in the solvent. 

The Toxicology Information Services at the Karolinska Institutet 1n Stockholm, Sweden, publish a monthly bulletin entitled Teratology Lookout. This excellent source of references of interest to experimental teratologists and clinicians is compiled by an advisory panel. The secondary sources Biological Abstracts, Biological Abstracts/RRM, and Chemical Abstracts and the MEDLARS data bases are scanned by the use of computer profiles to spot pertinent material.
