Chemical Abstracts Coverage

The appendix covers the period from mid-1984 to mid-1986, as defined by Chemical Abstracts coverage (Volumes 101-104). The structure designations and the reference numbering of the main body of the chapter are retained, and the presentation follows the same format but in less detail. No tabulation is given for new alkaloids in this section, but CA registry numbers (if assigned) and molecular formulas are included in the discussion. For our immediate purposes an alkaloid or botanical source is defined as new if it is not described in Chemical Abstracts prior to Volume 101. 

NIDA Researeh Monographs are indexed in the Index Medicus. They are selectively ineluded in the coverage of American Statistics Index, Biosciences Information Service, Chemical Abstracts, Current Contents, Psychological Abstracts, and Psychopharmacology Abstracts. 

Thianthrenes have not been dealt with previously in Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry. This chapter covers the chemistry of thianthrenes from 1960 to the end of Chemical Abstracts 1988 coverage. Earlier references are included only where they are of particular significance or serve to place later work in context. The family of linear tri-6-membered-cyclic heterocycles with group VIb elements located 1,4- in the central ring, of which thianthrene is a member, have been referred to as dibenzodi-chalcogenins, chalcogenanthrenes, and chalcanthrenes. This review will not attempt to draw comparisons between the chemistry of thianthrene and that of the other chalcanthrenes. 

CAPlus is the most current and most comprehensive chemistry bibliographic database available from the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and covers from 1967 to date. CAplus coverage includes international journals, patents, patent families, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations from all areas of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, and related sciences. 

In Part 2, the coverage of publications has been extended to papers reviewed in Chemical Abstracts up to Vol. 124 (June 3, 1996). New relevant synthetic items are treated within an addendum (Section VI). 

Salts of the perrhenate anion (including perrhenic acid) are not only the single most important group of starting materials for the synthesis of other rhenium compounds but are also of importance in catalysis and other commercial processes. Although they are formally coordination complexes of Revn and they appear quite extensively in the chemical literature (e.g. see Chemical Abstracts), much of the interest in them is outside the confines of the topic of coordination chemistry as it is commonly accepted. Accordingly, an effort has been made here to keep the coverage of their chemistry to a minimum. 

The editorial policies of Chemical Abstracts, adopted to meet the wishes of its users, have given this journal certain emphasized properties. These properties are described and discussed, because a knowledge of what to expect in a publication is essential to its most effective use. The scope of Chemical Abstracts is outlined, the three essentials for complete coverage within this scope are described, the efforts for quality in abstracts and for promptness in their appearance are discussed, form and arrangement are mentioned, and the five kinds of indexes published are considered, with the emphasis on subject and formula indexing. In the interest of growth in the service rendered by Chemical Abstracts, the editor offers an attentive ear to users of this journal. 

CA now systematically covers more than 9000 journals. We are sometimes asked what determines whether or not a journal is covered. The answer is that a journal is regularly examined as soon as it is discovered that at least occasionally it contains new information of chemical interest. Coverage, of course, does not mean abstracting all papers in a journal. As a matter of fact, CA abstracts all papers of only a comparatively small percentage of the journals in the List of Periodicals Abstracted by Chemical Abstracts (those devoted strictly to original papers in the field of chemistry). The above criteria for inclusion are applied to individual papers, not to journals. Many trade journals are covered, as well as... 

Abstracting journals, of both general and specialized coverage, are the chief means of keeping abreast of the constantly accumulating mass of new chemical developments. For the present purpose the author is concerned only with what is contained in analytical abstracts and where they are segregated in a periodical covering all of chemistry, such as Chemical Abstracts. 

In 1953 the various series of Referativnyi Zhiirnal started appearing. The coverage also started with that year—i.e., material published prior to that does not enter the Referativnyi Zhurnal. Chemical Abstracts has an understanding with Referativnyi Zhurnal that abstracts appearing in either may be translated and published in the other, giving credit to the source. 

A dagger (+) following the name of an agency or a publication indicates coverage by Chemical Abstracts for new chemical information. 

A good independent check is available for the middle of this period. Worden (15) attempted to index all United States chemical patents issued between January 1, 1915, and December 31, 1924. The number of patents indexed was 22,882, 5.7% of the 398,378 United States patents issued in that period. Close to 24,140 patents of this span, amounting to 6.1%, were abstracted in Chemical Abstracts, so that the comparison inspires confidence in the extent of its coverage while verifying the significance of the data in Table 1. 

These procedures serve a number of purposes in addition to maintaining the files. For example, the selections made in Chemical Abstracts are checked for completeness of coverage both at Mellon Institute and at Gulf Research, and a mimeographed bulletin is prepared for each issue it contains all the abstracts considered by the selectors to be of interest to Gulf Research personnel. This bulletin, prepared by the Information Section, is so arranged that individual abstracts can be clipped from it, pasted on file cards, and added to each man s personal file. The patent abstracts are published monthly in a mimeographed bulletin put out by the Patent Section. Thus, the entire technical personnel of the company is kept abreast of current developments in the field, and each man may build a personal file to suit his particular needs.
