The general pieces of equipment used in grinding flake mica or mica concentrate into saleable mica products are hammer mills of various types, fluid energy mills, Chaser or Muller mills for wet grinding, and Raymond or WiUiams high side roUer mills. Another method is being developed, called a Duncan mill (f. M. Huber, Inc.), that is similar in many respects to an attrition mill. AH of these mills are used in conjunction with sieves, and all but some types of hammer mills incorporate air classifiers as a part of the circuit. 

In batch or semi-batch polymerization processes it is often desirable to add a "chaser catalyst" towards the end of the reaction to reduce the residual monomer concentration to acceptable levels. The ability of the catalyst to reduce the monomer concentraion to low levels (ca 0.10 vol%) is of considerable importance for economic, envirorunental and physiological reasons. The chaser catalyst addition reduces processing time and increases throughput (Kamath and Sargent (1987)). 

Figure 9 compares Equation 20 with the recent pressure drop flow rate data of Friedmann, Chen, and Gauglitz (5) for a 1 wt% commercial sodium alkyl sulfonate dimer (Chaser SD-1000) stabilized foam in a Berea sandstone. These data are particularly useful because they have been corrected for foam blockage and therefore correctly reflect the flowing bubble regime. The solid line in Figure 9 is best fit according to Equation 20. Unfortunately, neither of the parameters c or 6 is available. Two sets of estimates are shown in Figure 9. When e - 0 (i.e., no surfactant effect) the bubble size is about 30% of a grain diameter. When — 0.1 mm (i.e., a value characteristic of those in Figure 8) the bubble size is about 10 grain diameters. We assert that Equation 20 not only predicts the correct velocity behavior of foam but it does so with reasonable parameter values (23).

Triethylenetetramine (redistilled, Eastman Organic Chemicals) prevents bumping and foaming and acts as a chaser for the distillation. 

You should be able to see that you have to be really careful in selecting those chaser, or pusher solvents mentioned. Sure, water (B.P. 100° C) is hot enough to chase ethyl alcohol (B.P. 78.3°C) from any column packing. Unfortunately, water and ethyl alcohol form an azeotrope and the technique won t work. For maximum yields, a chaser solvent should be used to push the compound that is left behind in the column on over into the condenser.
