Channels drilled

It is interesting to note that in the pioneering application of this approach [13], loop-based sample injection was accomplished using a channel drilled into the rotor of a rotary injection valve, which acted as the volume-selecting element instead of an external sampling loop.

For further comparative analysis, another mould model was created with parallel channel layout consisting of only straight channels drilled at the bottom of the cavity parallel to the length of the mould, as shown in Figure 4. 

The efficiency of gas turbines is limited by the maximum allowable turbine inlet temperature (TIT). The TIT may be increased by cooling of the blades and vanes of the high pressure turbine. Cooling channels can be casted into the components or may be drilled afterwards. Non-conventional processes like EDM, ECD or Laser are used for drilling. Radiographic examination of the drilled components is part of the inspection procedure. Traditional X-Ray film technique has been used. The consumable costs, the waste disposal and the limited capacity of the two film units lead to the decision to investigate the alternative of Real-Time X-Ray. 

Oil Spills. Oil spills occur from oil pipeline leaks, oil tanker accidents, or submarine oil drilling operations. The two major ocean drilling accidents—oil wells blowing out—were the 1969 Santa Barbara Channel spill and the 1979 Yucatan Peninsula spill, in Mexico. The Yucatan spill spewed out more than three million barrels before being capped in 1980. Both caused damage to beaches and marine life, but the smaller Santa Barbara spill was far more devastating because of unfavorable winds following the accident. 

The energy of the detected neutrons has an epithermal component because a high percentage of the incoming thermal neutron flux is absorbed as it passes through a 1 in. of drill collar steel. Furthermore, a wrap of cadmium under the detector banks shields them from the thermal neutron arriving from the inner mud channel. This mainly epithermal detection practically eliminates adverse effects caused by thermal neutron absorbers in the borehole or in the formation, such as boron. 

With increased development work from offshore platforms, more non-vertical (deviated) wells are being drilled. Settling of mud solids to the low side of the well bore can result in a continuous channel of undisplaced drilling mud solids in the casing annulus... 

A channel or shallow groove cut on the surface of a mould or a hole drilled right through a mould wall. The object is to permit the escape of air in the initial stages of moulding and prevent the defect known as Tight or bare moulding. Vermillion... 

Both LIBS and LA-ICP-MS offer spatial and depth resolution. A single laser shot provides an instantaneous measurement of approximately several nanograms to micrograms of sample. For spatial analysis, the laser is focused to several tens of microns and scanned across a surface. For depth analysis (including inclusions), the laser is pulsed repetitively at a single location to drill a channel into the sample (Fig. 5).
