Certified testing

Certified testing and approval for control-valve devices used in hazardous locations is normally procured by the manufacturer of the device. The manufacturer often goes to a third party laboratory for testing and certification. Applicable approval standards are available from CSA, CENELEC, EM, SAA, and UL. 

Some manufacturers National Board Certified Tests will have different values for some of their valves. Be sure to obtain the manufacturer s certified coefficient for the valve you select.

This test uses the entire HPTC system with a specific chromatographic method and validated Cl8 column that should be <10 cm and commercially available. Validated means that the individual column was performance tested before being shipped and that a certified test chromatogram is included with each column. Injection precision testing is typically performed by replicate injections of a test standard (at least six replicates are suggested). Experiments 10-27 are designed to check the autosampler injection precision, pump repeatability and detector/system linearity. Certified test curves and data (Appendix T) shall be submitted within 15 days after testing and shall inelude head, power recalculated to the proper specific gravity, and efficiency, plotted against capacity. If applicable, viseosity corrections shall be indicated. The water NPSHR curve shall be included, drawn from actual test data, for an impeller east from the same pattern. The curve sheet shall include the maximum and minimum diameters of the impeller design supplied, the eye area of the first-stage impeller, the identification number of the impeller or impellers, and the pump serial number.

Because of the cost and time required for extensive in-house testing, the trend today is to have most of the quality control tests done by the supplier. The supplier then provides a certified test report to the customer with shipment of the product. The test program that is used by the supplier, internal controls, etc., are usually verified and approved by the customer on a periodic basis, such as once per year. The approval tests are used to determine the adequacy of the particular materials in question and the production methods that will be employed. The tests that are done with every lot and submitted on delivery usually are made to ascertain the consistency of the product from lot to lot. 

Codes in most states require that backflow preventers be tested and certified on an annual basis. Certified testing personnel provide this service. Generally, because of the critical nature of backflow prevention and the need to maintain devices in proper working order, reduced-pressure backflow preventers should be designed for ser icing w ithout removal from the line. 

If the basic assessment or other results indicate an explosion risk, a variety of test methods is available to verify and characterize this substance property. If a positive verification is obtained, this result has to be notified immediately to a special national agency, which is uniquely authorized to carry out certified testing. Depending on customer requirements, constant verification of a filled material s properties may be required. This responsibility may to some extent be reduced by the use of customer-certified precompounded materials from approved suppliers. Otherwise, particularly when fillers are added to resin near the press, in-house testing may require trained support staff using standardized, certified testing equipment and methods, and additional quality certification procedures.

Calibration errors should be ascertained with a certified test weight of substantially lower uncertainty than the calibration tolerance of the balance (insofar as this is possible or necessary in practice). In the finest analytical balances, the achievable calibration-error tolerance is dictated by the accuracy of the available mass standards. However, this limitation is not relevant at the level of 0.1 % to 0.01 % accuracy applicable to most laboratory work. 

Immediate test kits are good, but they should not be depended on for remodeling and renovation projects. The simple kits can give you a quick read on a job, but they are not considered to be certified testing. As a contractor you should only depend on the services of qualified, certified testers and laboratories for your results. This is the only way to ensure that you will not suffer repercussions down the road.
