The formulation of cementitious products with use of powdered acrylics is accomplished through dry blending. After gaining information on cement-modifying acrylics, let us now gain an idea of two broad spec-trums of such acrylics acrylic-cement repair mortars and acrylic-cement protective coatings. These discussions are equally applicable to acrylic emulsions as well as to powdered acrylics. [Pg.120]

Under normal conditions on repair sites it seems likely that a more reliable bond can be achieved by using a bond coat rather than by relying on any natural bond between fresh and hardened Portland cement concretes(2). However, bonding agents for use on site must be tolerant of site conditions, be reliable and cannot be selected solely on the basis of slant shear results. The bonding performance of carefully applied SBR and acrylic latex/cement slurry coats appears to be similar to that of epoxy resin bonding aids(14). However, other factors such as open time, barrier coat effects and cost may affect the final choice. [Pg.217]

Polyelectrolytes provide excellent stabilisation of colloidal dispersions when attached to particle surfaces as there is both a steric and electrostatic contribution, i.e. the particles are electrosterically stabilised. In addition the origin of the electrostatic interactions is displaced away from the particle surface and the origin of the van der Waals attraction, reinforcing the stability. Kaolinite stabilised by poly(acrylic acid) is a combination that would be typical of a paper-coating clay system. Acrylic acid or methacrylic acid is often copolymerised into the latex particles used in cement sytems giving particles which swell considerably in water. Figure 3.23 illustrates a viscosity curve for a copoly(styrene-... [Pg.96]

Suspension polymerization also is used When acrylic monomers or their mixtures with other monomers are polymerized while suspended (usually in aqueous system), the polymeric product is obtained m the form of small beads, sometimes called pearls or granules. Bead polymers are the basis of the production of molding powders and denture materials. Polymers derived from acrylic or methacrylic acid furnish exchange resins of the carboxylic acid type. Solutions in organic solvents furnish lacquers, coatings and cements, while water-soluble hydrolysates are used as thickeners, adhesives, and sizes. [Pg.17]

Table 5.1 outlines useful properties, products and application areas of acrylic systems. Key market segments are coatings based on methacrylates as well as emulsions and water-based sealants. Acrylic emulsions and redispersible powders as cement modifiers offer many useful products for several end-uses. However, the high cost of acrylic has limited their use as cement modifiers. The use of water-based acrylic systems is increasing because of their non-toxic and environmentally friendly nature. [Pg.101]

When acrylic polymers are added into a cement mortar mix, their spheres coalesce to form a continuous polymer matrix which coats the hydrating cement grains and aggregate. This polymer matrix acts as a barrier which helps to improve the hydration of the cement and also provides a polymeric network which increases the toughness and durability of the finished product. [Pg.115]

Acrylic-modified cement coatings protect atmospherically exposed reinforced concrete structures from attack by chloride ions, oxygen and water. [Pg.121]

The range of monomers available and copolymeiization in varying compositional blends makes the number of possible polymer variants immense. Acrylic and styrene-acrylic copolymers are the most widely used polymers in paints and other coatings. According to Lesko " acrylic polymers account for 30% of commercial emulsion polymers. Other polymers commonly used in film forming latices are polychloroprene and poly(vinyl acetate). Polystyrene-cobutadiene latices are mixed with cement and sand to form rubberized cement, as well as being used as additives in textiles and paper industries, and in the manufacture of foam rubber. [Pg.1445]
