In both the materials used and the construction process, sustainability and efficiency will become standard. Improvements mjob site management and building design will reduce waste and cost of construction. Materials such as engineered wood, recycled carpeting, and cellulose insulation, which have lower environmental impact, will become cheaper and more widely available. Boric acid is used as an antiseptic in mouthwashes, eye washes, and ointments a preservative in natural products to protect wood against insect damage in washing citrus fruits as a catalyst in hydrocarbon oxidation as a flame retardant in cellulose insulation in nickel electroplating baths and as a buffer in ammonia analysis of wastewaters hy acid titration. [Pg.119]

Borates are widely used in fire retardant applications. For example, cellulose insulation products used in homes and cotton batting used in mattresses and other furnishings are typically treated with boric acid to inhibit smoldering combustion. Borates are also used as fire retardants or fire retardant synergists in plastics, rubber products, and paints, where specialized borates such as zinc borate may be used. [Pg.34]

Inorganic boron compounds are generally good fire retardants (59). Boric acid, alone or in mixtures with sodium borates, is particularly effective in reducing the flammability of cellulosic materials. A mixture of ammonium chloride and borax was one of the treatments of cellulosic fabrics reported by Gay-Lussac in 1821. Due to its low dehydration temperature and water solubility, sodium borates are only used as flame retardants in cellulose insulation (ground-up newspaper— see Sections 9.2.1.2 and 9.2.2.1), wood timber, textiles, urethane foam, and coatings. For example, a mixture of urethane (100 parts), borax (100 phr), and perlite (30phr) was claimed to provide flame-retardant urethane foam.8 Borax in conjunction with boric oxide, silica, ammonium chloride, and APB as ceramizing additives and volume builders, are claimed in a fire-protection coating based on polybutadiene and silicone microemulsion.9 Using a modified DIN 4102 test, the chipboard with the coating showed a loss of mass less than 1% and there was no pyrolysis of the wood sample. [Pg.209]

Cellulose insulation commonly refers to a loose fill product produced from ground newspaper. Due to the energy crisis of late 1970s and early 1980s, the use of cellulose insulation in residential markets came to prominence. The appeal of cellulose as an insulation material can be attributed to its good thermal insulation, the relative ease of installation, and the simplicity of its production. Most importantly, it is produced from nonpetroleum-based materials (i.e., recycled newspapers). [Pg.211]

Safflower is a minor oilseed crop limited in production by environmental constraints and by the plant s spiny nature. Unless the seed is well dehulled, the oilcake resulting from oil extraction will have a high fiber content. Undecorticated oil cake has a protein content of 20-22% and an end use as manure. In contrast, removal of the hull improves the protein content to 40%, making it acceptable as cattle feed despite low lysine levels. Major constituent of paper, cardboards, and textiles is the cellulose. Some of the products of cellulose are cellophane, rayon fiber, nitrocellulose, water-soluble adhesives, and binders. Powdered cellulose is used as inactive fillers in tablets and as a thickener and stabilizer in processed foods. In the laboratories, cellulose is used in TLCs as a stationary phase, liquid filtration, as highly hydrophilic and absorbent sponges. These days cellulose insulation made from recycled paper is becoming popular as an environment-fi-iendly material. On treatment with boric acid cellulose can be used as a fire retardant. [Pg.438]

Zinc borate. Zinc borate is the major boron compoimd used as a flame retardant in plastics. It competes with antimony oxide when antimony prices are high. The largest application for boron compounds as a flame retardant is in cellulose insulation. In construction applications, acrylic adhesives showed a spectacular 15- to-20-fold increase. In 1975, the predominant outlet was concrete binders but by 1987 acrylics were being employed in significant quantities for installation of ceramic tiles, decorative bricks and stones, carpeting, as a binder for cellulose insulation, and in concrete binders and adhesives.
