A quasicrystal is a quasiperiodic structure that is ordered but aperiodic, i.e., it lacks translational order. Its unit cell has defined angles and distances with respect to other unit cells but long-range translational order is missing. In addition to intriguing structural characteristics, the transport properties of quasicrystals are expected to be unique due to the missing translational order. For example, Man et al. showed that photonic quasicrystals are excellent candidates for photonic band gap materials, where the existence of photonic waves is forbidden in photonic band gap ranges [35]. [Pg.269]

In a few cases, the synthesis was directed towards well-defined oligomers (dimers, trimers, etc.). The synthesis of bis(5,7,3, 4 -tetra-0-benzyl)-EC 4/1,8-dimer from 5,7,3, 4 -tetra-0-benzyl-EC and 5,7,3, 4 -tetra-0-benzyl-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-EC was described by Kozikowski et al. [41]. This compound exhibited the ability to inhibit the growth of several breast cancer cell fines through the induction of cell cycle arrest in the Gq/Gi phase. Analogously, procyanidin-B3, a condensed catechin dimer, has been obtained through condensation of benzylated catechin with various 4-0-alkylated flavan-3,4-diol derivatives in the presence of a Lewis acid. This reaction led to protected procyanidin-B3 and its diastereomer. In particular, octa-O-benzylated procyanidin-B3 has been produced with high levels of stereoselectivity and in excellent isolation yields [42]. [Pg.247]

The Wegstein method is a secant method applied to g(x) = x - Fix). In Microsoft Excel, roots are found by using Goal Seek or Solver. Assign one cell to be x, put the equation for/(x) in another cell, and let Goal Seek or Solver find the value of x that makes the equation cell zero. A related reductive cyclisation has been developed by Schafer et al. in which the cathodic cyclisation of A-(oxoalkyl)pyridinium salts led to indolizidine and quinolizidine derivatives <95AG(E)2007, 03EJO2919>. Electrolyses of the pyridinium salts were carried out in a divided beaker-t5q)e cell at a mercury pool cathode under constant current, using 1 M aqueous sulfuric acid as the electrolyte. In this way, cyclisation of cyclopentanone 129 to the isomeric quinolizidines 130 and 131 was achieved in high yield and with excellent diastereoselectivity (Scheme 38).
