Fibroblasts secrete unique types of laminin proteins that interact with each other and type IV collagen, to form a basal lamina (yellow) that is tightly attached to the connective tissue (stromal) cells and also to the associated muscle or epithelial cell. The kidney glomerulus is a specialized tissue in which the stroma is absent and endothelial cells and epithelial cells are separated by the basal lamina which filters the blood as the first step in urine collection. The major biological activity attributed to IFNy is enhanced antigen presentation. This activity is effected by the induction of MHC class II antigens on a variety of cells, including epithelial, endothelial, and connective tissue cells, and monocytes (B32, P16, S51, V7). IFNy also acts as a macrophage activating factor (A6, YIO) and synergizes with TNF to effect tumor cell lysis and inhibit cell proliferation (S6).

An interesting approach reported for obtaining purified male and female fractions on microdevices involves acoustic differential extraction (ADE) and exploits microacoustic transducer developments (see Chapter 44 by Laurell for details). This method involves the elution of biological material from the vaginal swab under mild lysis conditions, resulting in a mixture of sperm cells and epithelial cell lysate. The sample is then infused in the microdevice, and sperm cells trapped in a monolayer above an ultrasonic transducer while free DNA (from the lysed epithelial cells) flows through the system unretained. Epithelium is the biological and medical collective term for cover and glandular tissues. It is composed of layers of cells that line the outside and the inside surfaces of organs. The outermost layer of the skin is composed of stratified squamous epithelial cells. Other epithelial cells line the inner layers of the respiratory.
