Cauterization

Potassium forms corrosive potassium hydroxide and Hberates explosive hydrogen gas upon reaction with water and moisture. Airborne potassium dusts or potassium combustion products attack mucous membranes and skin causing bums and skin cauterization. Inhalation and skin contact must be avoided. Safety goggles, full face shields, respirators, leather gloves, fire-resistant clothing, and a leather apron are considered minimum safety equipment. [Pg.518]

TCA is a chemical cauterant the application of which to the skin causes protein denaturation, so called keratocoagulation, resulting in a readily observed white frost. The degree of tissue penetration and ensuing injury by a TCA solution is dependent on several factors, including strength of TCA used, skin preparation and anatomic site. [Pg.60]

A large-diameter multihole urethral catheter should be inserted to facilitate saline lavage and evacuation of blood clots. Surgical removal of blood clots under anesthesia may be required if saline lavage is ineffective. Active bleeding from isolated areas may be cauterized with an electrode or laser. In severe cases that are unresponsive to local or systemic pharmacologic intervention,... [Pg.1480]

Cancer is an unwelcome, potentially life-threatening diagnosis that one-third of us will experience. The oldest descriptions of cancer date back to Egypt around 1600 BC. The so-called Edwin Smith Papyrus describes eight cases of what appears to be breast cancer. The tumors of the breast were treated by cauterization, with a tool called the fire drill . Clearly there was a desire and need to treat this dreaded disease, but the conclusion was There is no treatment . It is only in the last 100 years that we have developed more sophisticated tools to treat cancer. [Pg.200]

A source of ethylbenzene exposure to physicians and nurses in the operating room may be electrocautery smoke generated from dissection of tissues and cauterization of blood vessels (36 pg/m maximum detected in an area sample) (Sagar et al, 1996). Exposures to ethylbenzene from solvent use also occurred in a histology laboratory (Angerer Lehnert, 1979). [Pg.233]

Uses of the alkali hydroxides.—A soln. of potassium hydroxide is used in the laboratory as an absorbent for carbon dioxide, the sodium compound is not so often used because of the formation of less soluble sodium carbonate which is liable to choke the delivery tubes with crystals. Potassium hydroxide is used in making soft soaps the corresponding sodium compound gives the ordinary hard soaps. The hydroxide fused with a little lime is used as a cautery—pierre a cautere. The alkali lye is also used as a cleansing fluid, since it forms soluble soaps with many greases and fats. The lye also dissolves animal tissues. [Pg.509]

Biological and medicinal aspects of silver chemistry are covered in Chapter 62 but a number of features will be outlined here. Silver salts are powerful bacteriocides and it has been known for many years that storing water in silver vessels prevents spoilage. Silver nitrate is highly corrosive and can be applied locally to remove warts or cauterize wounds. In many states in the USA, a 1% AgN03 solution is dropped into the eyes of newborn infants to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum. Silver sulfadiazine has been found effective as a topical application to prevent infections in serious bums victims. [Pg.777]

Cotton fabrics will char immediately on contact with the compound and produce a dense smoke. A specific toxic effect other than the purely cauterizing effect of the compound has not been observed by the submitter during the past 10 years. [Pg.27]

During reflection of the tumor from the body, major vessels will be cauterized (using a standard battery-operated surgical cauterizer) as they appear. The goal is to reduce blood loss and more importantly to prevent a surgical shower of tumor cells. [Pg.225]
