Categorizing alternatives

In order to be more specific, let us look at examples of natural alternatives. One way of categorizing alternatives involves areas of experience. These areas of experience—from physical to spiritual—correspond to the kinds of gratification people seek when they use drugs. There is a lack in some area of experience and people try to use drugs to fill that deficiency. [Pg.54]

In situations in which physically well-motivated MR-CISD calculations are not computationally feasible, the need for adequate approximations of nondynamical and dynamical electron correlation must be balanced. One useful way of categorizing alternatives to MR-CISD is to focus on the sequence of treating nondynamical and dynamical correlation. One could address dynamical correlation for all, or part, of the model space first and, then, proceed to address the nondynamical correlation. This approach gives rise to an effective... [Pg.3]

CODESSA can compute or import over 500 molecular descriptors. These can be categorized into constitutional, topological, geometric, electrostatic, quantum chemical, and thermodynamic descriptors. There are automated procedures that will omit missing or bad descriptors. Alternatively, the user can manually define any subset of structures or descriptors to be used. [Pg.354]

These are errors that occur in situations where the operator has to make an explicit choice among alternatives. These may be physical objects (e.g., valves, information displays) or courses of action. It should be emphasized that the categorization of errors in Figure 5.7 is generic, and may need to be modified for specific industries. [Pg.215]

Warm water or low-, medium- or high-temperature hot water systems are categorized in Table 27.8. Warm water systems may use heat pumps, fully condensing boilers or similar generators, or reclaimed heat. In many cases the system design may incorporate an alternative heat generator for standby purposes or for extreme whether operation. Under such circumstances the system may continue to function at warm water temperatures or could operate at more conventional LTUW ones. [Pg.407]

As an alternative to the categorization system suggested above, the focus of evaluations can also be captured in fhe model shown in Table 10.2. [Pg.303]

This completes our discussion of the beisis and factors developed by past investigators to describe and conceptulize the structure of solids. You will note that we have not yet fully described the s)unmetry factor of solids. The reason for this is that we use symmetry factors to characterize solid structure without resorting to the theoretical basis of structure determination. That is, we have a standard method for categorizing solid structures. We say that salt, NaCl, is cubic. That is, the Na" ion and the Cl ion are alternately arranged in a close-packed cubic structure. The next section now investigates these structure protocols. [Pg.45]

Process Alternatives. Sulfur dioxide removal processes can be categorized as throwaway or recovery. Throwaway processes produce a liquid or solid waste that requires disposal. Recovery processes convert the sulfur dioxide to elemental sulfur or sulfuric acid. Throwaway processes have been used in most utility applications, but there could be greater incentives for using the recovery processes in industry. [Pg.31]

Using the TU concept, alternative schemes have been proposed to characterize the degree of joint action of multiple compounds acting together. In the first scheme, the sum of the TUs of the components M (i. e., M = 2 TU,) is used as an index to categorize the type of joint action as follows ... [Pg.271]

The chemical reactor is the unif in which chemical reactions occur. Reactors can be operated in batch (no mass flow into or out of the reactor) or flow modes. Flow reactors operate between hmits of completely unmixed contents (the plug-flow tubular reactor or PFTR) and completely mixed contents (the continuous stirred tank reactor or CSTR). A flow reactor may be operated in steady state (no variables vary with time) or transient modes. The properties of continuous flow reactors wiU be the main subject of this course, and an alternate title of this book could be Continuous Chemical Reactors. The next two chapters will deal with the characteristics of these reactors operated isothermaUy. We can categorize chemical reactors as shown in Figure 2-8. [Pg.51]

At Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, an in situ application of MAECTITE was used to treat 2000 yd of soil contaminated with lead and cadmium. Following MAECTITE treatment, leachable lead and cadmium levels in soils were less than residential human health standards. In addition, contaminant levels were low enough that the treated waste could be categorized as nonhazardous by Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) standards. Total costs for the project were 125,000, which was almost 40% less than alternative stabilization techniques considered at the site (D21483F, p. 3). [Pg.966]

In the United States, the use of products, including botanicals, thought to fall within the realm of complementary and alternative medicine is very common. It is difficult to obtain reliable estimates of use or to compare many of the current publications in this area because of diverse definitions for categorizing these products (e.g., dietary supplement, food supplement, herbal medicine, natural remedy, traditional medicine, etc.) in both the United States and elsewhere. A recent report on the use of complementary and alternative medicine by U.S. adults in 2002 indicated that approximately 19% of the population used nonvitamin, nonmineral, and natural products, 19% used folk medicine, and 3% used megavitamin therapy in the past 12 months (1). [Pg.275]

Because it will take time for the SPS Agreement to have a significant impact, alternative ways of managing most of the residue problems currently present in international food trade are also being examined. They are based on different concepts including that of the temporary tolerance, the adoption of MRLs by reference, the categorization of residue incidents, and the response and pipeline clearance strategies. [Pg.429]

This factor is used to categorize the option within the waste reduction hierarchal structure. The preferred hierarchy is source reduction, resource recovery and recycling, and alternative treatment (The fact sheet on waste reduction for metal finishers can help identify an option s place within the hierarchy.) Each category or level has a point value assigned to it. The six levels are ... [Pg.186]

The representation is unambiguous since it corresponds to one and only one substance, but it is not unique because alternative numberings of the connection table would result in different representations for the same chemical substance (the connection table representation is discussed in more detail below). In addition to being categorized according to their uniqueness and ambiguity, chemical substance representations commonly used within computer-based systems can be further classified as systematic nomenclature, fragment codes, linear notations, connection tables, and coordinate representations. [Pg.130]
