Polymer-supported catalysts often have lower activities than the soluble catalysts because of the intraparticle diffusion resistance. In this case the immobilization of the complexes on colloidal polymers can increase the catalytic activity. Other polymer materials which can be prepared include latexes, or particle agglomerates, by dispersed phase polymerisation. These can be either hydrophilic or hydrophobic in nature, or may have core-shell morphologies. They can be employed as support materials for a number of catalyst systems. Alkaline Fuel Cell The electrolyte for NASA s space shuttle orbiter fuel cell is 35 percent potassium hydroxide. The cell operates between 353 and 363 K (176 and 194°F) at 0.4 MPa (59 psia) on hydrogen and oxygen. The electrodes contain platinum-palladium and platinum-gold alloy powder catalysts bonded with polytetrafluoro-ethylene (PTFE) latex and supported on gold-plated nickel screens for current collection and gas distribution. A variety of materials, including asbestos and potassium titanate, are used to form a micro-porous separator that retains the electrolyte between the electrodes. The cell structural materials, bipolar plates, and external housing are usually nickel, plated to resist corrosion. The complete orbiter fuel cell power plant is shown in Fig. 27-62. [Pg.2166]

A latex-supported catalyst has been used to isolate sites. Styrene has been polymerized in the presence of an ionene diblock copolymer (a water-soluble cationic copolymer) to form a graft copolymer latex.31 The cobalt phthalocyanine sulfonate catalyst [CoPc(S03 Na+])4 was added and became attached to the cationic polymer. When this catalyst was used for the oxidation of thiols to disulfides by oxygen, the activity was 15 times that in a polymer-free system. [Pg.106]

Aqueous dispersions of charged copolymer latexes are active supports of cobalt catalysts for autoxidations of tetralin by cobalt-pyridine complexes and of 2,6-di-rm-butylphenol and 1-decanethiol by CoPcTs. Since these reactants are insoluble in water, a simple explanation of the catalytic activity is that the organic polymer serves to solubilize the reactants in the phase that contains the cobalt catalyst. All three reactions have initial rates that are independent of substrate concentration, as determined by absorption of dioxygen from a gas buret. All three reactions appear to proceed by different mechanisms. Tetralin autoxidation is a free radical chain process promoted by the CoPy complex, whereas the CoPcTs reactions are not free radical chain processes. The thiol autoxidation is reported to involve hydrogen peroxide, whereas the 2,6-di-re/t-butylphenol autoxidation apparently does not. [Pg.170]
