Anti-rust

Performance can be illustrated for example by the time necessary for deaeration or de-emulsification of oils, anti-rust properties, copper strip corrosion test, the flash point in closed or open cup, the cloud and pour points, the foaming characteristics, etc. [Pg.285]

Red lead is a useful ingredient of anti-rusting paints, in which it is mixed with linseed oil. If glycerol is added to this mixture, a cement suitable for luting (i.e. making airtight or watertight) joints in iron pipes or vessels is obtained. [Pg.195]

The seal must also resist the vibrations from the explosions of internal combustion in the engine, chassis and wheel vibrations, and even potholes in the road. This seal must resist strong chemicals (anti freeze, anti-rust agents, radiator stop-leak and sealant chemicals, gasoline and lubricant residuals), and also solid particles (rust, iron slag, minerals, asbestos fibers, and silica from the engine casting mold). In spite of all this, the mechanical seal on the water pump of your car can run 7, 10, even 15 years without problems. [Pg.181]

For tricresyl phosphate to be effective, oxygen, water and other polar impurities are important for the formation of reaction films. The beneficial influence of water and oxygen indicates that the formation of the reaction film is preceded by the hydrolysis of ester and the release of phosphoric acid which Anally reacts with the surface oxide film. The importance of the polar impurities present in TCP has been demonstrated [26] the probable identity of the important impurity is lauryl acid phosphate, found to be 20 times as effective at wear protection compared to pure tricresyl phosphate. A conclusion is that the ester function of phosphoric acid is necessary only to ensure solubility of the product in oil. TCP can also give rise to anti-rust protection by hydrolysis to phosphoric acid. [Pg.94]

Anti-wear additives are but one of a number of additive types formulated into base oils - there are also anti-oxidants. Chapter 4, and anti-acid, detergents anddis-persants. Chapter 7, lubricity, anti-wear, extreme pressure, pour point depressants, anti-rust and anti-foam additives. Chapter 6. Viscosity index improvers, VIIs, are high-molecular weight polymers which alter the temperature dependence of the base oil viscosity. Chapter 5. Taken altogether, the additive mass percentage of a formulated lubricant can be as high as 15-20%, a veritable chemical soup but one which is very carefully formulated and tested. The additives are often multi-functional, thus some VII compounds have a pour point depressant function. Chapters 5 and 6. Some anti-oxidants have anti-wear and also anti-acid functionality. Chapters 4, 6 and 3. Given these cross-interactions, formulation of a final lubricant product is a complex and skilled activity. Chapters 8-13. [Pg.569]

Other complex mixtures involving Mannich reaction products of use as anti-rust additives in lubricating oils have included the reaction of fatty acids (RCO2H), nonylphenol, with diethylenetriamine or triethylenetriamine and aqueous formaldehyde. It would appear that the primary amine groups result in amide formation at 160-180°C and the residual secondary amine group then undergoes a Mannich reaction in the usual way with t-octyllphenol and... [Pg.375]

Iron acid phosphates FeHP04 and Fe(H2P04)2 are produced as surface fihns if iron and steel are dipped in dilute orthophosphoric add. These films are protective and anti-rust and form a good base for paint adhesion (Chapter 12.7). The crystalline dihydrates M(H2P04)2 -2H20 (M = Fe, Mn, Zn, Co, Cd) form an isostructural series. The Mn and Zn salts may also be involved in the formation of protective films. [Pg.211]

Passivating is done with anti-rust coatings and primer paints containing chromates, which are also found in yellow or green pigmented paints, galvanized sheets, welding rods, and in solvents (Cronin 1980 Burrows 1983). Chromate dermatitis in the aircraft industry was first reported in 1944 (Hall 1944). [Pg.806]

The anti-wear additive has at least two components, i.e., a phosphate ester and an amine phosphate. The antioxidant is an aryl amine. The anti-rust additive is an amide carboxylate. The metal passivator is preferably a amine phosphate. The demulsifier is a low molecular weight extreme pressure or EO-PO pol5rmer. The defoamant is a two component system consisting of poly(siloxane) and poly(methyl methacrylate). In addition, an oleyl phosphate as anti-wear friction reducer can be added. Preferably the additives should have low levels or zero levels of metal and sulfur (10). [Pg.163]
