The IT Corporation thermal destruction unit is a mobile unit that uses infrared incineration technology. The main objective of this process is to transform the feedstock into another form (an ash acceptable for delisting) while assuring safe discharge of exhaust gas products to the environment. The unit is capable of on-site remediation of wastes and soils contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other organics. The dry-powder processes generally employ wire screen precut to the so-called master plaque dimension. The screens are placed in molds with loose powder on each side. They are then typically sintered in a belt furnace in a reducing atmosphere at 800 to lOOO C. [Pg.779]

Two entirely different approaches to the growth of fibers were required for [Ca(P03)2]Ai and [NaCa(P03)3] fibers. Calcium polyphosphate fibers were grown as dendritic spherulites, while sodium calcium polyphosphates were grown as single crystals that were not fibrous in any respect until milled. Both crystals could be grown in a belt furnace discussed below, but only the [NaCa(P03)3] crystals could be grown in a calciner in which feed crystals were sprayed with feed liquor. The microwave-assisted vulcanization of mbber compounds is the most important application of microwave heating to polymeric materials in terms of number of installed plants (Krieger, 1992). The processing capacity is about 500 kg/h. Control of the process and especially the extent of installed microwave output heat is typically 1 kW per 30 kg (approximately) of the product per hour. Continuous microwave belt furnaces are also available, where microwave generators are arranged in a spiral around the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical chamber to achieve a more uniform energy distribution. [Pg.368]
