Communication Career Development

In this chapter, we share with you the aspects of communication that mattered most to the thousands of employees and managers with whom we interacted. When asked about the professional development programs that support upward mobility, a European Big Bank branch manager and an employee shared with us that while you are allowed to develop yourself, it depends on your boss some promote your potential and others don t. That one s professional development opportxmities were subject to the idiosyncrasies of one s boss explains why, overall. Big Bank stakeholders didn t feel that there were fair (or widely communicated) opportunities for promotion or professional development (see Career development communication section in Chapter 6 for deeper coverage).

When the whole process is completed, it s time for the big meeting between employee and supervisor where the evaluation is gone over and the results communicated. Like a candidate interview, this isn t a one-way street. It s important for your boss to hear your views and understand your concerns. Career development discussions are usually part of these meetings too, and either here or, more often, at subsequent meetings goals for the next review period will start being drafted.

From my contacts with large numbers of young scientists, 1 find a surprising percentage who would be pleased (in fact, eager) to use their science training in any one of a variety of ways. But this requires that we both support their career development choices and continue to maintain contacts after they leave. Thus, we need to treat them as an important part of the broader scientific community— inviting them back to talk to our students and faculty as we currently do for those who pursue standard research paths.

Lack of downward communication impacted performance when standards were unclear. Said Big Bank employees, I hear there is a scorecard but have had no] communication about it from my management. Not getting feedback appropriately is not helpful to career development. Standard operating procedures also need to be communicated clearly from leaders. A Big School graduate student recalled ... 

The organization maintains safe staffing through such activities as crosstraining, adequate volume ratios, appropriate skill mix, and limited work hours. Education and career development plans foster core competencies of continuous performance improvement, direct and open communication, innovation, and problem solving. 

Whatever the professional history of those now having expanded responsibilities for environmental affairs and occupational safety, an urgency developed for additional technical knowledge and skills, and for more effective capabilities in people relations and communications. As a matter of career development and job security, safety professionals should consider reaching out to take environmental affairs into their responsibilities. That spells opportunity.

Occupational frustration-related stressors These stressors are concerned with the problems pertaining to occupational frustration. Three examples of these problems are the lack of effective communication, poor career development guidance, and the ambiguity of one s role.
