A phosphate-free detergent with excellent detergency and improved foaming and rinsing properties consists of 10% sodium a-sulfo hardened beef tallow fatty acid methyl ester, 10% sodium dodecyl sulfate, 5% a-sulfomyristic acid disodium salt, 10% zeolite, 10% sodium silicate, 10% sodium carbonate, 10% cellulose, 40% Flauber s salt, and 4% water [80]. 

In 2 N hydrochloric acid (0.5 ml) was dissolved 2-(4-amino-3-carboxymethylphenyl)propionic acid disodium salt, 53 mg, 0.2 mmol). Sodium nitrite (14 mg, 0.2 mmol) was added to the resulting solution under stirring and chilling with ice. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes under chilling with ice. The mixture was then neutralized with a chilled aqueous saturated sodium acetate solution. To the neutralized mixture was added a solution of thiophenol (0.02 ml, 0.2 mmol) in 6 N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (0.1 ml), and the mixture was stirred for 2 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was then made acidic by addition of 2 N hydrochloric acid, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate portion was extracted with an aqueous saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate solution. The aqueous portion was then made acidic by addition of 6 N hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate portion was washed successively with water and an aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to give 28 mg (yield 45%) of the 2-(3-carboxymethyl-4-phenylthiophenyl)propionic acid.

A representative sample of the product so prepared showed, upon analysis, 13.26% sodium against a theoretical of 13.70% for the disodium salt. The dialkali salt has a pH of about 5.3 and behaves like a weak acid, displacing CO from carbonates and reacting with metals to form hydrogen. It is a white crystalline solid. 

For an enzyme-containing detergent the enzyme is added to a detergent composition with esters and disalts of a-sulfo fatty acids. The detergent granular comprises 7 % sodium a-sulfo hardened palm oil fatty acid methyl ester, 5% disodium salt of a-sulfo hardened palm oil fatty acid, 10% sodium a-olefin (C14 18) sulfonate, 10% zeolite, 5% sodium carbonate, 5% water, and 55% sodium sulfate [82]. 

In recent studies, Friberg and co-workers (J, 2) showed that the 21 carbon dicarboxylic acid 5(6)-carboxyl-4-hexyl-2-cyclohexene-1-yl octanoic acid (C21-DA, see Figure 1) exhibited hydrotropic or solubilizing properties in the multicomponent system(s) sodium octanoate (decanoate)/n-octanol/C2i-DA aqueous disodium salt solutions. Hydrotropic action was observed in dilute solutions even at concentrations below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the alkanoate. Such action was also observed in concentrates containing pure nonionic and anionic surfactants and C21-DA salt. The function of the hydrotrope was to retard formation of a more ordered structure or mesophase (liquid crystalline phase). 

The lithium carbonate concentration was measured by acidimetric titration with methyl orange indicator. The calcium sulfate and calcium hydroxide concentrations were determined by titration with disodium dihydrogen Versenate [the disodium salt of (ethylenedinitrilo) tetraacetic acid], with added magnesium chloride.
