The similarity between the two samples demonstrates that these are probably representative of the bulk powder. Fig. 5. Once initiated, zirconium and carbon powders react exothermically in a vacuum or inert atmosphere to form zirconium carbide. With the greater availabiHty of relatively pure metal powders, this technique is coming into common use for the production of several refractory carbides. Zirconium carbide is not a fixed stoichiometric compound, but a defect compound with a single-phase composition ranging from ZrCQ to ZrCQ at 2400°C. [Pg.433]

The electrolyte is a perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer, commercially available under the trade name of Nafion . It is in the form of a membrane about 0.17 mm (0.007 in) thick, and the electrodes are bonded directly onto the surface. The elec trodes contain veiy finely divided platinum or platinum alloys supported on carbon powder or fibers. The bipolar plates are made of graphite or metal. [Pg.2412]

There are two further processes. Silicon-based ceramics can be fabricated by sintering or by hot-pressing. But a new route, reaetion bonding (Fig. 19.6), is cheaper and gives good precision. If pure silicon powder is heated in nitrogen gas, or a mixture of silicon and carbon powders is sintered together, then the reactions... [Pg.197]

Since these materials have significant microporosity, we expect their bulk densities to be low. For example, the tap density (100 taps) of BrlOOO was measured to be 0.81 g/cc, compared to 1.34 g/cc for the synthetic graphitic carbon powder, MCMB2700, measui ed by the same method. [Pg.384]

Each application for carbon treatment must be cognizant of the characteristics of the contaminant to be removed and designed with the proper carbon type in order to attain optimum results. Basically, there are two forms of activated carbon powdered and granular. The former are particles that are less than U.S. Sieve Series No. 50, while the latter are larger. The adsorption rate is influenced by carbon particle size, but not the adsorptive capacity which is related to the total surface area. —... [Pg.141]

With powder activated earbon, in most cases, the carbon is dosed into the liquid, mixed and then removed by a filtration process. In some cases, two or more mixing steps are used to optimise the use of powder carbon. Powder activated carbon is used in a wide range of liquid phase applications and some specific gas phase applications such as Incinerator flue gas treatment and where it is bonded into filters sueh as fabrics for personnel protection. [Pg.407]

CF) is prepared by the reaction of carbon powder with fluorine gas at an elevated temperature. The properties of (CF) are similar to those of polytetrafluoroeth-ylene (PTFE) which is prepared by organic synthesis. [Pg.39]

These conclusions from the infrared reflectance spectra recorded with Pt and Pt-Ru bulk alloys were confirmed in electrocatalysis studies on small bimetallic particles dispersed on high surface area carbon powders.Concerning the structure of bimetallic Pt-Ru particles, in situ Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS>XANES experiments showed that the particle is a true alloy. For practical application, it is very important to determine the optimum composition of the R-Ru alloys. Even if there are still some discrepancies, several recent studies have concluded that an optimum composition about 15 to 20 at.% in ruthenium gives the best results for the oxidation of methanol. This composition is different from that for the oxidation of dissolved CO (about 50 at.% Ru), confirming a different spatial distribution of the adsorbed species. [Pg.91]

Potassium permanganate creates violent combustion when it is heated with carbon powder and an explosion in the same conditions with titanium. It causes violent explosions when it is ground with phosphorus or sulphur. [Pg.202]

The palladium-tin catalysts were prepared by Engelhard on a commercial wood based carbon powder with a BET snrface area of approximately 800 m /g and a median particle size (D50) of 19 microns. The preferred carbon was chosen mainly for having good filtration properties. Catalysts with essentially equivalent activities for selectivity and conversion could also be made on two other similar carbons. The preparation process is proprietary but is based on the well-known adsorption-deposition technique (8). Reduction during the preparation process was accomplished via an Engelhard proprietary method. A series of catalysts containing from 1 to 7.5 wt% palladium and from 0 to 1 wt% tin were prepared by the same technique and provided for the experimental program. [Pg.137]

The catalyst layer is the most expensive part of this fuel cell. It is made from a mixture of platinum, carbon powder, and PEM powder, bonded to a conductive carbon fiber cloth. We obtained ours from E-Tek Inc. The cost for an order of their ELAT catalyst cloth sheet includes a setup charge. So get together with others for a larger order if you want to keep costs down. We paid 360 for a piece of ELAT 15.2 centimeters by 15.2 centimeters [6 inches by 6 inches] including the 150 setup charge. This piece provides enough for about twelve disks. Each fuel cell requires two disks of ELAT and one larger disk of PEM to make the sandwich, so you can make six cells from this size... [Pg.2]

In continuation of a previous work (1), catalytic hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde has been studied in slurry phase using a high-pressure autoclave. A series of carbon powder (CP)-supported Pt catalysts with widely varying Pt dispersion and Pt location on the support has been used in the study. The purpose has been to find out how the location of the metal on the support and its dispersion affect the two parallel reaction paths, namely the hydrogenation of the C=0 and C=C bonds. [Pg.71]
