US sieve series

Acbvated carbon may be found in two forms powdered and granuiar carbon. PACs are parbcies that are iess than US Sieve Series No. 50 (0.3 mm), white the GACs are iarger (5). Tabie 3 iists the typicai properbes of some Darco powdered activated carbons (7).

The Berea sand was obtained from Cleveland Quarries in Amherst, Ohio the montmorillonite was a clay mineral standard from Ward s Natural Science Establishment, Inc. Both solids were characterized well in terms of particle size distribution and surface area. The crushed clay and sand were sieved separately using US sieve series the fractions of sand and clay which passed through sieve No. 170 but not No. 200 were retained for use as adsorbents. The particle size distribution of these fractions is fairly narrow with the majority of particles in the 74-88 ym range (10). The surface areas of these adsorbents as determined by nitrogen adsorption were 2.86 m /g for the sand and 84.7 m 2/g for the clay.

US standard test sieves series, or laboratory size oscillating round screen unit. Two batches of 5-10 kg of coarse sand, and fine sand. 

Fine Pottery. Products similar to EARTHENWARE (q.v.) defined similarly by the combined nomenclature (q.v.) except that the body is made from a mixture of selected clays, to produce fine-grain, homogeneous porous body of water absorption > 5 wt %, coloured from yellow to brown or reddish brown. Fineness Modulus. Defined in USA as one-hundredth of the sum of the cumulative values for the amount of material retained on the series of Tyler or US sieves (excluding half sizes) up to 100 mesh.
