Carbon polishing

For the purposes of the estimation, it was assumed that the system treated water contaminated with 300 ppm benzene, toluene, and gasoline hydrocarbons, at a flow rate of 20 gal/min, using an activated carbon polishing step to an effluent concentration of 5 parts per billion (ppb) (D16385T, p. 1). [Pg.575]

Pyrolytic Carbon. Polished LTI carbon is composed of a crystalline graphitic-like microstructure, combined with amorphous material ( ). The polished samples have been shown to be oxidized with a C 0 ratio of about 10 1, containing three major types of carbon-oxygen functionalities quinone-like, ether-... [Pg.412]

At the present time, Cummins has decided to install a pretreatment system using dissolved air flotation as the primary treatment followed by an anthracite/sand backwashable filter and an activated carbon polishing filter. The effluent from the filters then goes to the RO unit. The RO will remove the last traces of the most soluble oils and organics, it is Cummins intention to have the effluent from the filters at a turbidity of less than kS JTU s. This should keep the RO units from fouling and will allow the RO to be used with minimal cleaning. [Pg.235]

Studies with rats, human adults and some children indicate that calcium-based polishing agents in five commercial and four experimental toothpastes prevent gut absorption of a considerable fraction of fluoride and monofluoro-phosphate owing to complexation [192]. Except for small initial losses of uncomplexed fluoride by interaction with calcium carbonate polishing particles, no major depletion of active ionic fluoride is found to occur in toothpastes over one year [359] but another study indicated considerable losses of free fluoride after only four months of shelf life [341]. It should be noted that analysis with the fluoride electrode might be unreliable in samples containing monofluoro-phosphate [360], glycerin [313] and silica gel [313]. [Pg.79]

The fourteen-tube module of 80 gpd (gallon per day) capacity was further constructed and the life was tested for 720 hours at 160 to 165 °F. Flux and rejection values were somewhat lower than the module element. Soap rejection ranged from 97 to 98 % and salt rejection ranged 88 to 92 %. An 80 gpd RO system was fabricated for recovering wash water at sterilization temperatures. The components included particulate filters, gauges, meters, RO pump, accumulator, carbon polishing column and RO module. [Pg.189]

CoAsS, are also used as sources. The ore is roasted and Co is precipitated as the hydroxide and then reduced to Co with carbon (hep below 417 - C, cep to m.p.). The metal is silvery white and readily polished. It dissolves in dilute acids and is slowly oxidized in air. Adsorbs hydrogen strongly. The main use of cobalt is in alloys. Cobalt compounds are used in paints and varnishes, catalysts. Cobalt is an essential element in the diet. World production 1976 32 000 tonnes metal. [Pg.104]

Other important uses of stannic oxide are as a putty powder for polishing marble, granite, glass, and plastic lenses and as a catalyst. The most widely used heterogeneous tin catalysts are those based on binary oxide systems with stannic oxide for use in organic oxidation reactions. The tin—antimony oxide system is particularly selective in the oxidation and ammoxidation of propylene to acrolein, acryHc acid, and acrylonitrile. Research has been conducted for many years on the catalytic properties of stannic oxide and its effectiveness in catalyzing the oxidation of carbon monoxide at below 150°C has been described (25). [Pg.65]

When the adsorption capacity of a carbon unit is exceeded, there is breakthrough of the contaminant in the treated stream. Eixed beds may be operated in series to allow continuous treatment while spent or exhausted units are replaced with fresh carbon. In series operation, there are two or more units. The majority of the contaminant is removed by the first unit in the series with the downstream units acting as polishing units. When breakthrough occurs in the first or primary unit, it is replaced with fresh carbon and becomes a polishing unit while the next unit in the series takes over and becomes the primary treatment unit. An example of this round-robin operation of a three-carbon bed is shown in Eigure 2. [Pg.160]

Chalk is a calcium carbonate prepared by precipitation. It is used in many polishing compounds including dentifrices. [Pg.494]

Dew-Point Method The dew point of wet air is measured directly by observing the temperature at which moisture begins to form on an artificially cooled polished surface. The polished surface is usually cooled by evaporation of a low-boihng solvent such as ether, by vaporization of a condensed permanent gas such as carbon dioxide or liquid air, or by a temperature-regulated stream of water. [Pg.1161]

The XPS survey spectrum of a 75 nm thick film of plasma polymerized acetylene that was deposited onto a polished steel substrate is shown in Fig. 18 [22]. This film consisted mostly of carbon and a small amount of oxygen. Thus, the main peaks in the spectrum were attributed to C(ls) electrons near 284.6 eV and 0(ls) electrons near 533.2 eV. Additional weak peaks due to X-ray-induced O(KVV) and C(KLL) Auger electrons were also observed. High-resolution C(ls) and 0(ls) spectra are shown in Fig. 19. The C(ls) peak was highly symmetric. [Pg.268]

It can be seen from Equation 7-12 that H2S alone cannot be removed unless there is sufficient CO2 present to provide KHCO3, which is needed to regenerate potassium carbonate. Since these equations are driven by partial pressures, it is difficult to treat H2S to the very low requirements usually demanded (14 grain per 100 scf). Thus, final polishing to H2S treatment may be required. [Pg.167]

Provided there is a suitable excess of chromium over carbon in the alloy, the irons will not rust when exposed to the atmosphere in the as-cast state. Alloys which have been found to tarnish in the as-cast state because of an inadequate excess of chromium may be found to be completely stainless in the machined and polished state, presumably because a thin film is more likely to be continuous on a smooth surface than on a rough one. [Pg.614]
