The markets for polyetherimides arise to an extent from stricter regulations concerning flammability and smoke evolution coupled with such features as high strength, toughness and heat resistance. Application areas include car under-the-bonnet uses, microwave equipment, printed circuit boards and aerospace (including carbon-fibre-reinforced laminated materials). The polymer is also of interest in flim, fibre and wire insulation form. [Pg.526]

In 1997 it was reported that carbon-fibre reinforced PEEK had replaced aluminium in the fuel pump suction manifold of the Airbus. For this application the product has to withstand pressure thrusts of up to 30 bar and resist kerosene at operating temperatures in the range 40-200°C. The ventilation wheel for cooling the electric motor in the same application has also been converted from aluminium to PEEK. [Pg.606]

In conclusion, wc have shown the interesting information which one can get from electrical resistivity measurements on SWCNT and MWCNT and the exciting applications which can be derived. MWCNTs behave as an ultimate carbon fibre revealing specific 2D quantum transport features at low temperatures weak localisation and universal conductance fluctuations. SWCNTs behave as pure quantum wires which, if limited in length, reduce to quantum dots. Thus, each type of CNT has its own features which are strongly dependent on the dimensionality of the electronic gas. We have also briefly discussed the very recent experimental results obtained on the thermopower of SWCNT bundles and the effect of intercalation on the electrical resistivity of these systems. [Pg.125]

Intended for high-performance applications because of their cost, carbon fibres have excellent mechanical properties but are sensitive to impact and abrasion. They are used for their attractive characteristics, such as ... [Pg.794]

A growing specialty application for acrylonitrile is in the manufacture of carbon fibres. These are produced by pyrolysis of oriented polyacrylonitrile fibres and are used to reinforce composites for high-performance applications in the aircraft, defence and aerospace industries. Other minor specialty applications of acrylonitrile are in the production of fatty amines, ion exchange resins and fatty amine amides used in cosmetics, adhesives, corrosion inhibitors and water-treatment resins (Brazdil, 1991). [Pg.47]

Let us consider one final example the application of atomic force microscopy (AFM) relating to nanoscale scratch and indentation tests on short carbon-fibre-reinforced PEEK/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite blends (Han et al, 1999). In the scratch test, the tip was moved across the surface at constant velocity and fixed applied force to produce grooves with nanometre scale dimensions on the PEEK matrix surfaces. The grooves consisted of a central trough with pile-ups on each side. These grooves provide information about the deformation mechanisms and scratch resistance of the individual phases. In the nanoscale, indentation and... [Pg.40]

Recently, both the fundamentals of CO2 adsorption and its applicability are gaining interest [9-13]. From studies conducted with activated carbons and activated carbon fibres [9,10], CO2 adsorption at 273K and at sub-atmospheric pressures has been proposed as an appropriate alternative to assess the ultramicroporosity [10,11]. Despite that N2 and CO2 have similar critical dimensions, since CO2 adsorption is carried out at a temperature higher than its boiling point the gas molecules can enter the narrowest porosity of the solid [4,8-13]. [Pg.485]
