Estrogen deficiency has been correlated with the development of colorectal cancer, the third most commonly diagnosed cancer. When estrogen levels are low, expression of the ER diminishes. Colorectal cells without ER expression are ripe to become cancerous. If estrogen levels are boosted by HRT, then ER expression should improve correspondingly, thereby reducing the number of colorectal cells primed to become malignant. The WHI study clearly shows a substantial decrease (37%) in the occurrence of colorectal cancer in patients treated with HRT.

Palombo and colleagues (40) investigated the effects of different types and concentrations of CLA and linoleic acid on colorectal and prostate cancer (PC3) cell proliferation and cytotoxicity. Linoleic add was without effect at all concentrations and in all cells, which appears to be a consensus in all reports. PC3 cells were the least sensitive to CLA treatment of the cells studied. These authors also found an induction of a homogeneous caspase activity (caspases 2,3,6-10) indicative of an induction of apoptosis, but they did not investigate other underlying cellular mechanisms to explain their findings. 

Ischaemic hver may be toxic to weakly metastatic human colorectal cancer (CRC) cells on reoxygenation (Jessup et al. 1999). This toxicity involves reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. 

In clinical practice, FDG PET is currently used with a variety of human cancers such as nonsmaU cell lung cancers, colorectal, esophageal, breast, and thyroid carcinomas, melanomas, lymphomas, head and neck cancers, and other tumors (38). 

It was also reported that CAPE inhibited the proliferation of human leukemic HL-60 cells and hinnan colorectal cancer HCT116 cells and induced apoptosis (Chen et al., 2001 Wang et al., 2005). Thus, 2-cyclohexylethyl caffeate and 3-cyclohexylpropyl caffeate might induce apoptosis.
