Both the benefits and toxicides of mechlorethamine stimulated a worldwide search for new antineoplastic agents. In the United States, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) had been established in 1937 and was already empirically studying plant extracts for anticancer activity. In 1955, the NCI established the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center to systematically screen drugs in vitro and in vivo. NSC numbers were assigned to each new drug screened and the number now exceeds 720 000. Over the past half century, a growing understanding... [Pg.384]

Since the period that commenced about the end of World War II, several thousand plants growing in Australia and New Guinea have been screened for alkaloids, and many hundreds of new bases, as well as large numbers of known ones, have been isolated. The greater part of this work was accomplished by the CSIRO in collaboration with the American pharmaceutical firm SKF, which carried out a wide range of pharmacological testing, and the US Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center, which examined materials for anti-tumor activity. In addition to his writing and speaking talents. Bill Baker s organizational abilities were in great demand. He served on many important government advisory boards and on several editorial boards. He was a member and, later, chairman of the Chemistry Panel of the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center of the National Cancer Institute in 1957-1960, and served as a member of the National Advisory Cancer Council in 1960-1962. He was a member of the NIH Medicinal Chemistry A Study Section from 1966-1970, and served as its chairman from 1967-1970. As a consultant to the National Cancer Institute from 1962-... [Pg.9]

An interesting property found to be associated with certain of these copolymers, particularly the DVE-MA copolymer, is their physiological action. The DVE-MA copolymer of M = 15000-20000 has been found by the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center, National Institutes of Health, to be a promising anti-tumor agent [10]. For example, in certain tests, the weight of the tumor developed by the test animal was only 11% of that of the control animal. Also, more recent results [11] have shown in both laboratory and clinical studies that this copolymer possesses the ability to induce interferon generation. [Pg.98]

In addition to technical reports, the National Institutes of Health issue several other publications. One of these is the Journal of the National Cancer Institute which publishes not only a large part of the work done at the National Cancer Institute but also research in many other institutions in the U.S. and other countries. It is available from GPO at 20 a year for 12 issues. Another publication is the Psychopharmacology Service Center Bulletin which is distributed at irregular intervals by the Psychopharmocology Service Center, National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda 14, Md. It is issued for information purposes to investigators interested in psychopharmacology. Two other publications of NIH are Cancer Chemotherapy Reports and Cancer Chemotherapy Abstracts which may be obtained from National Cancer Institute, Publication Office, Room 213 Robin Building, Bethesda 14, Md. [Pg.191]
