More recently, in the nineteenth century, there was a great increase in the application of foreign chemicals to agriculture. Discovered or, more precisely, rediscovered was the usefulness of sulfur, lime sulfur (calcium poly sulfides), and Bordeaux mixture (basic copper sulfates). With the exception of formaldehyde, inorganic chemicals provided farmers with their major weapons. [Pg.1142]

Lignites and lignosulfonates can act as o/w emulsifiers, but generally are added for other purposes. Various anionic surfactants, including alkylarylsulfonates and alkylaryl sulfates and poly(ethylene oxide) derivatives of fatty acids, esters, and others, are used. Very Httle oil is added to water-base muds in use offshore for environmental reasons. A nonionic poly(ethylene oxide) derivative of nonylphenol [9016-45-9] is used in calcium-treated muds (126). [Pg.182]

Salts of neodecanoic acid have been used in the preparation of supported catalysts, such as silver neodecanoate for the preparation of ethylene oxide catalysts (119), and the nickel soap in the preparation of a hydrogenation catalyst (120). Metal neodecanoates, such as magnesium, lead, calcium, and zinc, are used to improve the adherence of plasticized poly(vinyl butyral) sheet to safety glass in car windshields (121). Platinum complexes using neodecanoic acid have been studied for antitumor activity (122). Neodecanoic acid and its esters are used in cosmetics as emoUients, emulsifiers, and solubilizers (77,123,124). Zinc or copper salts of neoacids are used as preservatives for wood (125). [Pg.106]

Polymeric Calcium Phosphate Cements. Aqueous solutions of polymers such as poly(acryHc acid), poly(vinyl alcohol), gelatin, etc, and/or autopolymerizable monomer systems, eg, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, glycerol dimethacrylate, calcium dimethacrylate, etc, have been used as Hquid vehicles (41,42,76) for the self-setting calcium phosphate cement derived from tetracalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate [7757-93-9J. [Pg.474]

Resin cement materials are provided as a two-part powder—Hquid product. The powder consists largely of poly(methyl methacrylate) to which various fillers (qv) maybe added. These include calcium carbonate [471-34-1], siHca [7631-86-9], barium carbonate [513-77-9], and calcium tungstate [7790-75-2]. An organic peroxide, eg, benzoyl peroxide, capable of generating free radicals is also present (see Initiators Peroxides, organic). [Pg.475]

Calcium carbonate is controlled with poly(maleic acid) (26) and organic phosphonates. Dispersants designed to control silica and magnesium silicate (7,27,28) have been introduced. [Pg.151]

Seawater Distillation. The principal thermal processes used to recover drinking water from seawater include multistage flash distillation, multi-effect distillation, and vapor compression distillation. In these processes, seawater is heated, and the relatively pure distillate is collected. Scale deposits, usually calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, or calcium sulfate, lessen efficiency of these units. Dispersants such as poly(maleic acid) (39,40) inhibit scale formation, or at least modify it to form an easily removed powder, thus maintaining cleaner, more efficient heat-transfer surfaces. [Pg.151]

The polymerization of aromatic diamines with acid chlorides in solution works well.7 914 35 The basicity of the aromatic diamine is low and acid binding can be achieved with several compounds and even solvents such as TV-methylpyrrolidonc (NMP) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The all-para aromatic amide poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) can be synthesized in DM Ac.7,9,14 To prevent precipitation of the polymer, a salt such as calcium chloride or lithium chloride can be added. It is also possible to react the acid chloride with a silylated diamine ... [Pg.156]

Gogolewski et al. " combined Pluronic F-68(poly(ethylene-propylene-ethylene oxide) with PCL within the same soft segment. BD or 2-amino-l-butanol was used as the chain extender and HDI as the hard segment. They observed that all the materials calcified and calcification increased with material hydrophilicity. The stmcture and composition of the calcium crystals formed on the materials depended on the PU chemistry. [Pg.237]

Recent interest has focused on acidic phosphoproteins, such as bone sialoprotein, acting as sites of nucleation. These proteins contain motifs (eg, poly-Asp and poly-Glu stretches) that bind calcium and may provide an initial scaffold for mineralization. Some macromolecules, such as certain proteoglycans and glycoproteins, can also act as inhibitors of nucleation. [Pg.550]
