High purity hexafluorozirconic acid and its salts are produced by Advance Research Chemicals of the United States, and Akita and Moritta of Japan. The technical-grade green-colored material is suppHed by Cabot Corp. of the United States. In 1993, the U.S. market for fluorozirconic acid was about 250,000 kg/yr the world market was less than 500,000 kg/yr. A principal part of this production is consumed by the wool, garment, and upholstery industries. The 1993 price varied between 2.4 to 6.6/kg depending on the quaUty and quantity required. Potassium fluorozirconate [16923-95-8], K ZrF, is commercially important the world market is about 750,000 kg/yr. The most important appHcation is as a fire-retardant material in the wool (qv) industry, for the manufacture of garments, upholstery for aeroplane industry, and children s clothes (see Flame retardants). Several manufacturers of ceramic powders are involved in commercializa tion of hydrothermaHy derived powders. In the United States, Cabot (Boyertown, Peimsylvania) has built a small manufacturing plant and is supplying materials to capacitor manufacturers. Other manufacturers include Sakai Chemical and Euji Titanium in Japan. Sakai Chemical is reportedly producing 1 t/d in its demonstration plant. The anode and cathode chambers are separated by a cation-permeable fluoropolymer-based membrane (see Membrane technology). Platinum-electroplated high surface area electrodes sold under the trade name of TySAR (Olin) (85,86) were used as the anode the cathode was formed from a two-layer HasteUoy (Cabot Corp.) C-22-mesh stmcture having a fine outer 60-mesh stmcture supported on a coarse inner mesh layer welded to a backplate. The cell voltage was 3.3 V at 8 kA/m, resulting ia a 40% current efficiency. The supply and demand for mbidium compounds has grown steadily since the 1970s. In 1979 the U.S. demand was ca 1040 kg of contained mbidium (16), and total world demand was estimated at approximately twice that of the United States. Reserves of mbidium in North America are estimated at 2 X 10 kg the United States is - 100% import-reliant for mbidium, and Canada is the principal source of the raw material (16). The demand for mbidium metal is small compared to the demand for mbidium compounds. Table 2 fists approximate prices of mbidium metal and mbidium compounds. Primary producers of mbidium are Cabot Performance Chemicals (Boyerstown, Pennsylvania), MSA Research Corporation (Callery, Pennsylvania), and CM Chemical Products, Inc. The shrinkage in demand has resulted in a restmcturing of the carbon black-industry. Several of the principal multinational oil companies have left the business including Ashland, Cities Service Co., Phillips, and Conoco. Some plants have changed ownership. In the United States this has increased the production capacities of Degussa, Sid Richardson, and Huber. Today s U.S. industry consists of six principal producers. Rated capacities of the six U.S. manufacturers is shown in Table 13. Cabot Corp. and Columbian Chemicals are the leading producers, followed by Degussa, Sid Richardson, J. M. Huber Corp., and Witco. The nonporous spherical gels for PCHdC are often specially prepared for research purposes. However, nonporous polystyrene/divinylbenzene beads. Solid Bead, can be obtained in various particle sizes from Jordi Associates, Inc. (Bellingham, MA). Columns packed with these gels can be used for HdC of the polymers that are currently analyzed using polystyrene/divinylbenzene SEC columns. Fumed silica nanospheres are offered by Cabot (Tuscola, IL) (17), and nonporous silica (NPS) microspheres are offered by Micra Scientific, Inc. (Northbrook, IL).
