Cables that must function as long as possible in safety control systems e.g., fire and gas detection systems, ventilation damper control and power systems, UPS, public address and communication systems, intrinsically safe systems. 

One of the most difficult adhesive problems involves the underwater sonar systems. Elastomers (29) (Neoprene rubbers) are adhered to metals with adhesives. The applications include cable sheath, vibration isolator and damper, acoustic absorber, sound reflector, sonar-dome window, and transducer boot. A poor bond at the Neoprene-steel interface could easily lead to saltwater penetration and corrosion, which eventually causes the failure of the sonar dome. 

Industrial applications include pipe seals, hydraulic system seals, dampers for machinery and high speed printers, and motor lead wire insulation. The fact that the polymer contains no halogens along with certain unique compoimding techniques for flame resistance prompts the selection of ethylene-acrylic as jacketing material on certain transportation/military electrical cables, and in floor tiles.

Another exampie of passive fire protection is the design of escape routes, which shouid not incorporate combustibie waii, ceiiing or floor iinings. Fire dampers shouid be instaiied in ducts where they pass through compartment walls, and holes in such walls around cables and other services should be fire stopped.
