The following procedure yields fluorine free from the usual impurities of the fluorides of carbon and silicon and operates at the convenient temperature of 75°C. [Pg.142]

This method is similar to that of Lebeau and Damiens,3,6 differing only in details, such as the use of commercial [Pg.142]

The electrolyte, which will be discussed in detail later, is contained in a cylindrical pot which serves as the cell (see Fig. 26). This vessel is made from j/ -in. monel metal sheet and has a depth of 14 in. and an inside diameter of 4 in. [Pg.143]

In place of monel metal, other materials may be substituted, the most economical being steel. Supported within the pot by a lid of sheet copper is a diaphragm in which fluorine collects. It is made from 2-in. copper tubing, is insulated from the lid by Portland cement, and has near its base three openings about in. square. [Pg.143]

The section of H-in. tubing which runs through the insulator acts both as an electrical connection to the anode and as an exit for the fluorine. A piece of 0.0032-in. sheet nickel 3K in- square rolled into a cylinder serves as an electrode, and it is bolted to the center of a disc of copper which covers the bottom of, and is firmly fastened to, the diaphragm. With such a combination, fluorine is liberated on the nickel but not on the copper. A thermometer well of copper tubing is fastened to the cover of the pot. [Pg.143]

Several manual and continuous analytical techniques are used to measure SO2 in the atmosphere. The manual techniques involve two-stage sample collection and measurement. Samples are collected by bubbling a known volume of gas through a liquid collection medium. Collection efficiency is dependent on the gas-liquid contact time, bubble size, SO2 concentration, and SO2 solubility in the collection medium. The liquid medium contains chemicals which stabilize SO2 in solution by either complexation or oxidation to a more stable form. The ASTM Corrosion Test procedure by Total Immersion Method requires that all specimens in a test series should have the same dimensions when comparisons are to be made. In these experiments, carbon steel was used representing the pipeline material. The coupons were cleaned, polished and weighed. Coal-water slurry, 10 to 40 weight percent, was used in the corrosion tests. For the coal-water slurry the intitial pH of the medium varied from 2.3 to 2.6 and the test series containing the nutrient media, the microorganisms and the inhibitors the pH varied from 2 to 2.5. Specimens were immersed in the reaction vessel maintained at a constant temperature of 86°F for 72 hours or the specified time. The coupons were removed, washed with deionized water, dried and weighed. The loss in weight of the specimen, before and after the test was attributed to corrosion. [Pg.97]

Synthesis of carbon nanostructures by pyrolysis and arc discharge in the gas phase has been performed by the known methods. Synthesis in the liquid phase has been carried out on the installation designed specially for these studies (Fig. 2).
