The defect was detected and located during the proof test, and acoustic emission could follow its evolution until 20 bars during the burst test. After the pressure, the evolution of defect stopped till the burst. This test confirm the capability of acoustic emission to detect the evolution of defect during a pneumatic test with a sufficiently wide margin relative to the burst pressure.

For knitted fabrics exhibiting high extensibiUty to failure, the ball burst test is recommended (ASTM D3787). A poHshed steel ball is pressed onto a rigidly held circle of knitted fabric. The force on the ball required to mpture the fabric is reported as breaking strength. 

Rupture discs are typically manufactured to order, where each order represents a lot. The ASME Code defines three mediods of acceptance testing for rupture discs. The most common method requires dial at least two discs from the lot be burst tested at the specified disc temperature. The results of these tests must fall within the rupture tolerance. The certification of disk performance is to be based on actual bursting tests of two or more disks from a lot of the same material of the exact same size as the disk to be sold by the manufacturer. The holder for the test disks must be identical to the design, dimensions, etc., for the disk being certified. (See details ASME code. Par. UG-127 [1]). 

As allowed by code [1], the average of the manufacturer s disks burst tests could be stamped, for example, (144 + 160.5)/2 = 152.3 psig with an actual 5% of 152.3 psig allowed for actual burst pressure of any disk at the operating temperature.

In the burst test a flat sheet of paper is clamped by a cireumferential ring and a small rubber diaphragm underneath is gradually inflated with fluid, foreing the sheet to bulge until it ruptures. The hydrostatic pressure at the moment of failure is measured. The virtues of the burst test are its simplicity and the speed with which it can be undertaken. The reeorded hydraulic pressure offers a quantitative measure of bonding between fibres. It is linearly related to tensile strength.
