Bursting strength, paper testing

The bursting strength is the hydrostatic pressure required to mpture a specimen when it is tested in a specified instmment under specified conditions. It is the pressure required to produce mpture of a circular area of the paper (30.5-mm dia) when the pressure is apphed at a controlled rate (TAPPI T403). It is related to tensile strength and extensibiUty and is used extensively throughout the industry for packaging and container grades. [Pg.2]

The basic mission of the Physics and Biology Laboratories is to test paper treated with products used in the restoration process. Physics is in an air-conditioned room, maintained at 60% relative humidity at 21°C, equipped with machines for testing folding endurance, tensile, and burst strength of paper. Biology runs tests, primarily with culture media, to determine the susceptibility of the treated paper to attack by microorganisms these are identified and a determination is made on how to avoid or eradicate them. Aging chambers are available for tests made by the laboratories. [Pg.42]

There is an almost unlimited number of ways to characterize spunbonded fabrics. Many tests in use were originally developed for the characterization of textiles and paper products. When taken together, properties such as tensile, tear, and burst strength toughness elongation to break basis weight thickness air porosity dimensional stability and resistance to heat and chemicals are often... [Pg.5153]

The bursting strength is important in the characterization of packaging papers. The bursting strength of paper is determined in accordance with ISO 2758 (2001) and that of board in accordance with ISO 2759 (2001). In the testing instrument, the free area of the sample stretched in a circular frame is exposed to increasing pressures until it ruptures. [Pg.470]

In the burst test a flat sheet of paper is clamped by a cireumferential ring and a small rubber diaphragm underneath is gradually inflated with fluid, foreing the sheet to bulge until it ruptures. The hydrostatic pressure at the moment of failure is measured. The virtues of the burst test are its simplicity and the speed with which it can be undertaken. The reeorded hydraulic pressure offers a quantitative measure of bonding between fibres. It is linearly related to tensile strength. [Pg.534]

Grain can also be detected by a Mullen burst test (and tensile strength)—see Paper and board testing below. [Pg.117]
