Production, Import/Export, Use, Release, and Disposal. Asbestos is widely used by humans in a variety of products, and exposures are likely from a number of sources. Extensive data are available on current production, import, and use of asbestos (U.S. Bureau of Mines 1992). Releases to the environment may occur either to air or to soil and water, with releases to air being of greatest health concern. Waste friable asbestos is regulated as a hazardous substance, so disposal is permitted only in authorized waste sites. Methods of handling friable asbestos are prescribed to minimize dust release. However, data are lacking on the amount of asbestos disposed in waste sites, and on the location and status of these sites. [Pg.207]

European Chemicals Bureau (http //ecb.jrc.it/) and the Hazardous Substance DataBank (http //toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/). When insufficient data were available for human chronic toxicity, a prediction of the carcinogenic and mutagenic effects was performed with the OSIRIS tool, available at the Organic Chemistry Portal (http // www.organic-chemistry.org/prog/peo/). [Pg.558]

The oil and gas industry has operated on the U.S. outer continental shelf (OCS) for decades, but the U.S. offehore wind industry is only now becoming established. At the time of this writing, offshore wind projects have received preliminary approvals from relevant federal agencies, but construction has not yet started. As mentioned in Chapter 3, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) issued basic requirements for a safety management system (SMS) in Subpart H of 30 CFR 585 in 2009 but has not fully defined the substance to be included in an SMS. Chapter 4 identified many hazards shared by land-based and offshore wind farms and relevant federal regulations and industry standards that may apply, and it discussed several hazards unique to offshore wind farms. [Pg.108]

Bureau of Labor Statistics data indicate that 275,500 workers suffered injuries to hands and fingers in 1994. That means about 12 percent of all work-related injraies are to hands or fingers. That s a significant percentage. Yom company shordd select and require employees to use hand protection when they are exposed to hazards such as skin absorption of harmful substances, severe cuts or lacerations, severe abrasions, prmctures, chemical brums, or harmfrd temperature extremes. [Pg.677]
