Survey of Current Business. A monthly publication prepared by the Bureau of Economic Analysis of the Department of Commerce. Like Economic Indicators, it contains statistical macroeconomic data and articles of general business interest (LCN HClOl. A13).

A great deal of information concerning definitions and assumptions made in arriving at the U.S. input-output tables can be found in the following fundamental and classical articles, published in the Sun>ey of Current Business, published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis of the U.S. Department of Commerce. 

In order to utilize the lO approach to conduct LCA, the EIO-LCA uses data derived fiom the bureau of economic analysis (BEA) and publicly available environmental data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) [20]. In Taiwan, EIO-LCA uses the data derived from the report of industrial statistics published by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics of the central government.

The media s intense focus on China s exports to the United States has strangely ignored the fact that total US imports from all Pacific Rim countries, including China, have actually been in a steady decline since 1994, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. Chinese exports to the United States have indeed been on the rise and to some extent, have replaced exports to the United States from other Asian countries, but not by nearly enough to keep the total overall volume from decreasing steadily.

For other measures of the economic impact of the chemical industry, we used national income data generated by the Bureau of Economic Analysis in the Department of Commerce see, for example, National Income and Product Accounts of the United States (lA, 1981). Other more esoteric economic measures (such as total factor productivity) are discussed in Chapter 4. Readers interested in money and manpower invested in research and development by the chemical industry are referred to the specific sources mentioned in Section 5.1 and to the NSF series Research and Development in Industry produced by the Division of Science Resources Studies (e.g., lA, NSF, 1976c).
