Burdock

Burdock is considered to have diuretic and orexigenic properties. It is used to treat cutaneous eruptions, rheumatism, cystitis, gout, anorexia nervosa, and especially eczema and psoriasis. [Pg.88]

Arctium lappa L. (burdock) is used as food, preventive and medical remedy. East medicine usually uses it as a fresh root of its first year of vegetation. In some countries burdock is cultivated for use as food and a medicinal herb. Thus the development of analytical documentation for this plant raw material is essential. [Pg.372]

Separation of chloroformic fraction of raw material by a polyamide sorbent with the following individual fractions elution and crystallization allowed to study lignans of burdock with IR-, mass- and NMR spectroscopy. In result, aixtiin, arctigenin, lappaols were identified. Sepai ation of essential oils was provided by the method two of State Phaiiuacopeias of the Ukraine. Essential oils were analyzed by the means of gas chromatography. [Pg.372]

Cinnamyl anthranilate can be synthesized by esterification of anthranilic acid with cinnamyl alcohol (Burdock, 1995). Annual production in the United States in the 1970 was in the range of a few hundred kg (lARC, 1983). It has not been commercially available, except for research purposes, since 1985 (Lucas et al, 1999 Food and Drug Administration, 1999). [Pg.178]

Recently, Maruta et al. [112] have found that methanol extracts of roots of burdock show a significant antioxidant activity in an in vitro lipid peroxidation assay, and have isolated five caffeoylquinic acid derivatives (CQAs) from the roots of burdock (Arctium lappa L ), an edible plant in Japan. Antioxidant activities of DCQAs and related compounds have been investigated by measuring the hydroperoxidation of methyl linolate via radical chain reaction. This study indicates that in this particular system caffeic acid and CQAs are more effective than a-tocopherol. These results approximately agree with our findings [38], Additionally, CQAs as the principle antioxidative substance in burdock root have been characterized. [Pg.944]

Folklore Burdock was traditionally used to heat skin complaints and inflammations. The roots can be eaten raw in salads or cooked like carrots and the young leaf stalks can be scraped and cooked like celery (Bown, 2003 British Herbal Medicine Association, 1983 Hutchens, 1973 Shealy, 1998 Tierra, 1998). [Pg.320]

Habitat This large plant, which grows to a height of five feet, is very commonly met along roadsides and in all waste places—indeed, wherever we see nettles, there also will be found Burdock. [Pg.26]

The liquid from 1 ounce of the root boiled in 1A pints of water simmered down to 1 pint, is taken four times daily in wineglass doses for many forms of skin trouble, noticeably boils, carbuncles and similar eruptions. Obstinate cases of eczema and even psoriasis have been known to yield to these decoctions of Burdock root, either alone or combined with other remedies. [Pg.27]
