Another design which provides unusually low mating forces employs bundles of wires in both halves of the connector that intermesh, like two hair bmshes, when the parts ate connected (2). [Pg.25]

Many other opportunities exist due to the enormous flexibility of the preparative method, and the ability to incorporate many different species. Very recently, a great deal of work has been published concerning methods of producing these materials with specific physical forms, such as spheres, discs and fibres. Such possibilities will pave the way to new application areas such as molecular wires, where the silica fibre acts as an insulator, and the inside of the pore is filled with a metal or indeed a conducting polymer, such that nanoscale wires and electronic devices can be fabricated. Initial work on the production of highly porous electrodes has already been successfully carried out, and the extension to uni-directional bundles of wires will no doubt soon follow. [Pg.73]

Alloy with Memory. In seeking a way to reduce the brittleness of titanium, U.S. Navy researchers serendipitously discovered a nickel-titanium alloy having an amazing memory. Previously cooled clamps made of the alloy (nitinol) are flexible and can be placed easily in position. When warmed to a given temperature, the alloy hardware then exerts tremendous pressure. Use of conventional clamps for holding bundles of wires or cables in a ship or aircraft structure requires special tools. For this and other applications in industry and medicine, nitinol has been in demand. The alloy, however, is not easy to produce because only minor variations in composition can affect the snap back" temperature by several degrees of temperature. [Pg.1072]

Whenever possible, tendons are assembled in the factory. The wires are first measured off to the required length on a fully automatic cutting bench. Then the bundle of wires is passed through a template and the one anchor head, and button-heads are cold-upset onto the wires at this end. In order to make all the wires parallel, the tendon is then pulled through the template by pulling the anchor head. To keep the differences in the lengths of the wires in a curved duct to a minimum, and to preserve the parallelism of the wires even when they are wound onto reels for transport, the tendon is given three to five complete twists and then bound at intervals of approximately 3 m (approx. 10 ft). The pneumatic tire has the geometry of a thin-wallcd toroidal shell. It consists of as many as fifty different materials, including natural rubber and a variety ot synthetic elastomers, plus carbon black of various types, tire cord, bead wire, and many chemical compounding ingredients, such as sulfur and zinc oxide. These constituent materials are combined in different proportions to form the key components of the composite tire structure. Among the additional data examined, the only non-normal characteristics found were for some of the results in (M10), which again, as in the earlier investigation (M4), apply to 19-rod bundles with wire-wrap supports. The consistent pattern that now seems to be emerging is that it is only the use of wires wrapped around the rods that causes nonnormal characteristics. Nitridation of source metals occurs in the range of about 1 cm from the head of wire bundle, except for tungsten. Electron beam plasma generated along the beam path may greatly contribute to the nitridation process at an elevated temperature. [Pg.412]

In the second approach to self-assembly of polymer-silica nanocomposites, polymerizable surfactants are employed both to direct self-assembly into ordered mesophases and to serve as organic monomers which can be subsequently polymerized.
