Fatty oils and fat-like substances - Fats and oils are esters of glycerin and higher fatty adds. In pure form, oils (castor, sea-buckthom and others) are used as remedies or as solvents for pharmaceutical substances. Fatty oils are used in medicine to make ointments, liniments and emollients, and for skin care and therapeutic massage. Some oils have therapeutic action. For example castor oil is used as a puigative and sea-buckthom is used internally to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers and externally for skin bums. Plant waxes, sterols and other substances are fat-like substances. Some of them are used in medidnal preparations. Unsaturated fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, linolenic, palmitic and other acids) prevent development of atherosclerosis. They are contained in plant seeds (almond, sunflower, flax and others), and fruits (olives and sea-buckthom). [Pg.14]

Combustor. In the majority of MHD plant designs the MHD combustor bums coal directly. Because MHD power generation is able to utilize pulverized coal in an environmentally acceptable fashion, there is usually no need to make cleaner fuels from coal, eg, by gasification or by beneficiation. A discussion of combustion techniques for MHD plants is available (70). [Pg.427]

The failure rate changes over the lifetime of a population of devices. An example of a failure-rate vs product-life curve is shown in Figure 9 where only three basic causes of failure are present. The quaUty-, stress-, and wearout-related failure rates sum to produce the overall failure rate over product life. The initial decreasing failure rate is termed infant mortaUty and is due to the early failure of substandard products. Latent material defects, poor assembly methods, and poor quaUty control can contribute to an initial high failure rate. A short period of in-plant product testing, termed bum-in, is used by manufacturers to eliminate these early failures from the consumer market. [Pg.9]

X Bq of Pu has been released, mostiy from bum-up of the nuclear powered sateUite SNAP-9a and that 3.7 X 10 Bqof + ° Pu was released by the Chernobyl accident (167,168). Many studies have been done to determine the cumulative fallout on sods, plants, bodies of water, animals, and humans. For example, the cumulative Pu fallout ia forest and grasslands and ia the Hver of elderly humans ia Bavaria, Germany are approximately... [Pg.204]

Emissions control systems play an important role at most coal-fired power plants. For example, PC-fired plants sited in the United States require some type of sulfur dioxide control system to meet the regulations set forth in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, unless the boiler bums low sulfur coal or benefits from offsets from other highly controlled boilers within a given utiUty system. Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) is most commonly accomphshed by the appHcation of either dry- or wet-limestone systems. Wet FGD systems, also referred to as wet scmbbers, are the most effective solution for large faciUties. Modem scmbbers can typically produce a saleable waUboard-quaUty gypsum as a by-product of the SO2 control process (see SULFURREMOVAL AND RECOVERY). [Pg.10]

In 1991, Goodyear began working with Cadence Environmental Energy (Indiana) to market a whole tine feed system to supplement fuel for cement kilns. The system is used by several cement manufacturers. In 1992, Goodyear furnished tines for a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) test bum at a Memphis power plant. The electric utiUty used tine-derived fuel (TDE) to supplement coal fuel in a cyclone boiler. These tests were successflil. [Pg.12]

In Japan, scrap tires are used to fuel Pordand cement kilns. The process was developed by the Bridgestone Tire Company and has increased gready in importance since 1980. The Saitama plant (Nihon Co., Ltd) bums 140,000 tires, as weU as oil, per month to produce 258,300 t of cement (qv) per month (17). Cemenergy (Loomis, California) and Emanuel Tire Company (Baltimore, Maryland) cement companies and paper mills bum scrap tires to produce process energy (18,19). It has been predicted that 238 million passenger and tmck tires wUl be consumed by the energy market aimuaUy by 1997 (20). [Pg.14]

About 6000 MW of electricity generating capacity in the United States is based on the operation of several hundred wood-fired plants. Most of them ate owned by paper companies and saw mills, which bum their own scrap wood to generate heat and electricity, primarily for on-site use. Excess electricity is commonly sold to utilities. Eewer than 10 of the country s wood-fired plants, generating less than 300 MW, are actually operated by utilities other wood-fired plants have been built and are operated by iadependent producers. The largest units range between 50—60 MW. [Pg.107]

Also, EPRI is iavestigatiag whole-tree bum power plants that will dry and bum SRWC fuel without requiring tree trimming, wood chipping, or other fuel preparation. The concept iavolves the combustion of tree crops from farms distributed within a 40-km radius of a given plant. [Pg.107]

Large sulfuric acid plants are based on spray burners, where the sulfur is pumped at 1030—1240 kPa (150—180 psig) through several nossles iato a refractory-lined combustion chamber. An improved nossle, resistant to plugging or fouling, has been iatroduced (256). The combustion chambers are typically horizontal baffle-fitted refractory-lined vessels. The largest plants ia fertiliser complexes bum up to 50 t/h of sulfur. [Pg.145]

Spinning-cup atomisers are used ia some plants to provide finer atomisation, allowiag smaller burner chambers and easier turndown, but with the burden of added rotating equipment. Rotary kiln burners were once popular to bum lower quaHty sulfur, but few are stiU ia operation. Spray burners can be operated intermittently and used at higher rates than rotary burners. [Pg.145]

Plants that bum good quaUty elemental sulfur or H2S gas generally have no faciUties for purifying SO2. Before the advent of relatively pure Frasch or recovered sulfur, however, hot gas purification was frequentiy used in which the SO2 gas stream was passed through beds of granular soHds to filter out fine dust particles just prior to its entering the converter. [Pg.183]

The semiregenerative procedure for catalyst regeneration varies slightly between catalyst vendors however, it typically follows these general steps plant shutdown, carbon bum, oxidation and chlorination, nitrogen purge, reduction, and plant start-up. During the plant shutdown, Hquid hydrocarbons... [Pg.223]
