Tire Building

Tack (or building tack) A property of an elastomer or rubber compounds that causes two layers of compound that have been pressed together to adhere firmly in the areas of contact. It is very important for building tires or other laminated structures. [Pg.259]

Insoluble Sulfur. In natural mbber compounds, insoluble sulfur is used for adhesion to brass-coated wire, a necessary component in steel-belted radial tires. The adhesion of mbber to the brass-plated steel cord during vulcanization improves with high sulfur levels ( 3.5%). Ordinary rhombic sulfur blooms at this dose level. Crystals of sulfur on the surface to be bonded destroy building tack and lead to premature failure of the tire. Rubber mixtures containing insoluble sulfur must be kept cool (<100°C) or the amorphous polymeric form converts to rhombic crystals. [Pg.224]

In the same way that natural mbber is predominandy used in blends, it is also predominandy used in tire manufacture. Its excellent building tack, low heat buildup, low rolling resistance, and good low temperature performance make it the polymer of choice for many parts of tire constmction, for both passenger and tmck vehicles. The effects of radiali2ation and demand for low rolling resistance and good low temperature performance have all tended to benefit natural mbber, especially in tmck tire constmction, as shown in Table 9. [Pg.272]

Processings and Properties. Polybutadiene is compounded similarly to SBR and vulcanised with sulfur. The high cis-1,4 type crystallizes poorly on stretching so it is not suitable as a "gum" stock but requires carbon black reinforcement. It is generally used for automotive tires in mixtures with SBR and natural mbber. Its low T (—OS " C) makes it an excellent choice for low temperature tire traction, and also leads to a high resilience (better than natural mbber) which ia turn results ia a lower heat build-up. Furthermore, the high i j -polybutadiene also has a high abrasion resistance, a plus for better tire tread wear. [Pg.469]

The tire analysis was assisted by SNL using methods described in NUREG/CR-4840 and the extensive operating history and fire experience. For 94 reactor-years from 1958 and 1987, 20 significant fire events were recorded. Hence, frequencies for the reactor building and the diesel generator buildings of 0.12 and 0.03 /y, respectively. A control room fire has never occurred at a SRS reactor. [Pg.420]

Asphalt, because it is not reactive to chemicals in the environment, is a superb material of construction in the building of roads and in roofing. It is also used in the waterproofing of concrete, the manufacture of black paints, and as a material lor tire threads, battery housing, electrical insulation, and other applications. The heaviest of all the petroleum products, coke, is used extensively as a major component of industrial electrodes and as a commercial fuel. [Pg.943]

It is emphasized that the above checklist is not exhaustive. Any reductions in the standards identified above will lead to difficulty of operation, tire scmb, potential damage to vehicles and buildings, and general inefficiency. Cost effectiveness could also be hindered due to loss of time caused by blocked-in vehicles. Safety is also a highly important factor, which should be prominent in any decision-making. [Pg.19]
