Brighteners laundry detergents

Some laundry detergents contain optical brighteners. These are fluorescent dyes that glow blue-white in ultraviolet light. The blue-white color makes yellowed fabrics appear white.

Immerse a piece of test fabric in a hot solution(0.5 gof detergent, 200 mLof water) of a commercial laundry detergent that you suspect may contain an optical brightener (e.g.. Tide and Cheer) for 15 min. Rinse the fabric thoroughly, dry, and compare with an untreated fabric sample under an ultraviolet lamp. 

The reverse process, ultraviolet light producing visible light by fluorescence, is very common. Certain brands of laundry detergents contain materials called optical brighteners which, for example, can make a white shirt look much whiter and brighter than a similar shirt washed in ordinary detergent.
